New team at Tucucmari Golf Course

After a four year absence, Charlie Maciel has returned part-time to the Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course.
Teaming up with Rex Maddaford of Tucumcari, they have formed M&M Golf  and were recently awarded a four year contract to manage the city course.

M&M was hired when golf pro Howie Tucker left earlier this year to become the pro at the T or C city golf course.

Maciel is no stranger to Tucumcari. He has 20 years of experience on his home turf. He was the high school golf coach for 20 years, and  he served as the mayor of Tucumcari for four years, he said.

"I'm glad to be back. I've really missed all the people," he said.

A PGA golf pro, Marciel's home base has been Clovis since 2004, where he  manages the Clovis Municipal Golf Course as well as the nearby Farwell  Country Club in Texas.

In Tucucmari, M&M Golf has already started on improvements at the course.

"Right now we are in the process of bringing the course back into shape," Maciel said. "There is some sprinkler and hydraulic work that needs to be addressed, but the greens are coming back in nicely."

A priority is to repair the irrigation system, but the pro shop will get a face lift and  a new coat of paint. A previous loan through the Greater Tucumcari Economic Development Corp. for a new well has been paid off and with further help from the GTEDC, future plans call for the installation of an automated satellite irrigation system.

On the players side, Maciel said there plans to offer more lessons from beginners through advanced golfers or for those who just want to a brush-up on certain parts of their game.

"We want to make this an open course, and look forward to promoting the great game of golf to all of Tucumcari," Maciel said.
