Chamber preps for Mardi Gras-themed banquet

The event features a shrimp creole dish and an on-stage hypnotist.

Residents will enjoy a Mardi Gras meal and theme and the works of an on-stage hypnotist this Saturday at the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet and fundraiser.

“We wanted to change things up a bit to give our guests a wonderful experience,” said Gail Sanders, COC Director.

Sanders said the banquet will take place at the Tucumcari Convention Center and will be catered by Cornerstone First Edition Pizza and Subs. She said Cornerstone’s owner Todd Duplantis is going to prepare a shrimp creole dish. In spirit of the dish the board felt a Mardi Gras theme would produce a lively atmosphere, Sanders added.

Sanders said for this year’s entertainment, a board member researched and found the comedy stage hypnosis act of Dr. “H” (Rick Honea) out of Lubbock.

The banquet also serves as a fundraiser as the chamber’s budget is comprised of the membership dues, donations from the Lodgers Tax Board and Quay County and money raised from fundraisers.

Sanders said the majority of the money raised each year during the banquet comes from the silent auction. She said the money raised is used toward the chamber’s efforts to promote tourism and business to the region and chamber members.

Sanders updated the Quay County Commission on current promotions including the banquet during Monday’s regular meeting. She also informed the commission of her plans to retire.

“I want to thank you for all of the work you have done in promoting Tucumcari and Quay County,” said Franklin McCasland, Commission chair.

Commissioners Mike Cherry and Sue Dowell echoed McCasland’s statement, thanking Sanders for her work and congratulating her on her retirement.

Sanders did not give an official last day.

“The board is in the process of finding a new director, with several promising resumes already being reviewed,” Sanders said. “I have enjoyed representing, promoting Tucumcari and Quay County.
