District open 'for all of the marbles'

Rattler wrestlers go in as 2-4A runners-up.

The Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling season comes down to the District 2-4A open tournament Saturday at the Snake Pit in Tucumcari.

“Saturday’s tournament is for all of the marbles,” said Eddie Encinias, Rattlers head coach.

Encinias said the Rattlers enter Saturday’s open tournament as the District 2-4A runners-up. He said the team finished two points behind first-place Robertson.

“The team wrestled their hearts out, they beat Taos by a few points and just fell short of the district championship,” Encinias said.

Encinias said Saturday’s matches will determine who will go to state to compete for a title. He said the Rattlers have a good chance of qualifying everyone for state.

“The wrestlers have pushed themselves all season, now is the time for it to show,” Encinias said. “When they step out on to the mat it will all be up to them. They either wrestle their way into state or their season is done and they stay home.”

Encinias said Saturday’s district open will feature some of the best teams from across the state including Taos, Robertson, Saint Michael’s and West Las Vegas.

“We ask that the community come out and support the Rattlers wrestling team,” Encinias said.
