Seven area students participated in the Knights of Columbus State free throw competition March 17 in Tucumcari.
"These kids did an amazing job at representing Quay County and Saint Anne's Council." said Jerry Lopez, Grand Knight of Tucumcari's Knights of Columbus. "They went up against others from across the state. I am extremely proud of these kids."
The winner in each age group (ages 9-14) hit the most shots out of 25. No New Mexico student hit 25-of-25 for a national qualification.
Kendall Ragland, Deakin Ragland, Johnny Contreras, Joshua Griego, Dennis Birch, Andrew Clark, and Nathan Griego were local competitors.
Kendall Ragland, 14 of San Jon, placed second in her age group. She also competed in 2017 and took first.
"It was amazing to see all these kids come together and compete," Lopez said. "There was a moment during warm ups when they all worked together and developed their own system to allow everyone a chance to practice. You could tell these children were all leaders and very respectful."
