On Monday county commissioners met in special session and approved a roofing contract for the court house. County Manager Richard Primrose said the commission approved the contract of $203,300 to WWRC Inc. of Clovis. He said the company has 10 days to start on the roof after being notified of the approval. Primrose estimate it would take 90 days to finish the project. The Tucumcari Oasis Tree Project helping in the beautification of Tucumcari by offering memberships to the Arbor Day Foundation. The fee is $10 and each person receives 10 free trees. Rebecca Blakeney started the project. She said when she moved to Tucumcari in September and saw the community had been planting trees around the town, she wanted to help the community with getting more trees planted. Black Friday in Tucumcari turned out the community in large numbers. Rhonda Kandel, manager of K Mart, said the store had many special sales for shoppers. She said Tucumcari shoppers were fantastic and were shopping Tucumcari in better numbers this year with three days of door buster sales. VFW Commander Fred Porter said this year was a great turn out of supporters to help put out the flags. Gene Ross and his son Chris Ross, employees at Versatile Construction, were working when they could hear dogs barking from somewhere around the plant. They went looking around to find where the sound was coming from and finally were able to locate the two dogs, who were trapped under the grain silos. "Boots" McCoy was born in the Oklahoma Panhandle on Dec. 1, 1926, and was raised on a farm where they went to work in the mornings plowing the fields to raise wheat. Tucumcari and Logan middle schools are getting surprise grant money from the state for improving student test scores. Tucumcari Middle School will receive $13,463.91 and Logan Middle School is getting $3,328.16. The award recognizes the middle schools as one of just 48 schools in New Mexico earning a "Top Growth" designation from the state Public Education Department. Tucumcari city commission is considering holding town hall meetings to encourage more community involvement. Commissioner Daniel Lopez expressed his concerns Thursday. Tucumcari school teachers received a donation of $220 per teacher from the First Baptist Church. Teachers have been buying supplies out of their own pockets for years to make sure they had the tools essential in teaching the children, said First Baptist Church Pastor John Hinze. Emergency personnel and police officials still have few answers to the circumstances which led to 14-year-old Alex Jauck having to be rescued from Tucumcari Mountain. Emergency workers rescued a Tucumcari teenager Monday afternoon from a narrow ledge on the face of Tucumcari Mountain. Police, Farmers Electric Coop employees and a member of a local fire department reached the teenager, who was stranded about midway up the 700-foot landmark south of the city, about 3:45 p.m. It was not immediately clear how long Alex Jauck, 14, had been stranded. On Monday a community came together at the Quay County Fair Barn to help fill "Care Bags" for those people who are going through treatments for cancer and other devastating disease.
