  • Co-worker known for dedication, service

    Feb 15, 2012

One more day, one more conversation, one more outburst of laughter and even one more time just to argue with you. These are a few things I and many others wish we could have with Catherine Bugg. I’d like one more chance to speak up and let her know just how much she and her friendship mean to us. We shared this office, Amanda Smith, Catherine and I; it was our second home in a sense. I know that sounds crazy or maybe even a little sad, but for five days a week we spent about seven hours together. Sometimes we even spent weekends together, singi...

  • Pets' quirks make them endearing

    Feb 15, 2012

Pets can have some pretty strange idiosyncrasies. Some of them become pretty endearing others are just irritating. Take for instance the younger of our two dogs, Ranger. Since the older dog slept on the bed with us, when he moved in he decided he would just sleep under the bed. Never mind that he has to totally flatten his chunky body and push and pull himself under with extended legs and paws. He used to stay there all night but lately he goes back into the living room or to the loveseat in the office. When the alarm goes off in the morning...

  • Congress renews assault on Internet

    Feb 15, 2012

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," abolitionist Wendell Phillips warned in 1852. Nothing's changed. Congress was forced to shelve two similar bills that nearly made it into law, the Stop Online Piracy Act, commonly called SOPA, in the House of Representatives; and the Protect Intellectual Property Act, or PIPA, in the Senate. The bills would have allowed the government, after a court hearing but no immediate trial, to shut down virtually any site considered to violate copyright laws. Now, like the ghosts in "Poltergeist II," they're...
