  • Thomas: Better decision-making can lead to horror-movie survival

    Mar 5, 2013

You know that moment when you start screaming at the TV because the character in a horror movie is about to do something stupid. I'm not sure if it is a form of Tourette syndrome, but I'm pretty sure we have all done it while watching a scary movie. You know those situations, when a person hears a noise in the darkest part of the house and decided, "I should investigate that noise while wearing a robe and using my cell phone as a flash light." One of my favorites is when they go in to the woods and suddenly decide you know what, this would be...

I am presenting them on your behalf to protect our way of life in eastern New Mexico. You all know about the outcry over the mismanagement of much of the lands the federal government has control of in our state. Forests are over grown and burning...

  • Lauriault: Jesus our only ticket to eternal life

I attended a fundraiser recently that included a silent auction (several pictures of that event were in last week's Quay County Sun). For each bid a ticket was given toward a drawing for a GPS unit. I had bid a couple of times each on several items and had eight or ten tickets. When the time came for drawing, the last three numbers on the selected ticket were 648. After three calls and a countdown from ten, it was concluded that the holder of ticket 648 had left the building. So, another ticket was selected and it had one of my numbers on it. A...

  • Comments from the canyons: Cattle branding glimpse of history

    Mar 5, 2013

A few days ago, some travelers asked if I knew any history of this area, and I had to admit I had lived a large part of it. They were particularly interested in learning a little about ranching. I had the feeling that they thought they were in the Wild West and expected to see a herd of cattle stampeding down the street, followed by some wild, pistol-toting cowboys. They asked about cattle brands and wanted to know if cattle are still branded. Fortunately, I could tell them a little about brands and branding. I began by telling them they could...

  • One needs not be Catholic to pray for Pope

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Mar 5, 2013

Well, color me surprised! I went home at noon to get a sandwich; what I got was a ringside seat at a historical moment. I don't need 24-hour news, and I think our world and our society in particular would be better off without the endless repetition. We talk too much anyway. But I'd flipped on the TV for about 24 seconds worth of news, just to see what was being endlessly repeated at that particular time. As it happened, I'd turned on the tube about five minutes before the exact moment when the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI officially went i...
