    Thomas Garcia, Senior writer|Mar 22, 2017

Despite the absence of energy company officials, more than 130 county residents shared concerns about nuclear waste March 14 during a public information meeting at the Logan Civic Center. The Department of Energy wants to drill narrow, vertical holes called boreholes in Nara Visa to do a study to find out if storing nuclear waste in them is an alternative to mined geologic repositories for smaller forms of nuclear waste. Quay County residents aren't too happy about the concept with residents...

  • State grieves with Cannon for lost airmen

    Albuquerque Journal|Mar 22, 2017

In New Mexico we celebrate — and often take for granted — our U.S. military forces. We turn out en masse for parades and fireworks displays. We jealously guard the budgets of our national labs, Air Force bases and Army missile range. We glance up at the flyovers. And we don’t think twice when we see a vehicle with a Purple Heart license plate parked next to one with a Disabled Veteran plate down the row from one with a National Guard plate. But there’s an unspoken risk and sacrifice that comes with having such a large and important militar...

  • Apperances matter for economy

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Mar 22, 2017

I have to admit I’m a little hacked by recent developments in Tucumcari, but I’m more puzzled than angered by the situation. Einstein is credited with saying the definition of insanity is doing the same thing the same way over and over again and expecting different results. Tucumcari needs to change some things if it expects to improve its economic situation in the foreseeable future, but not everyone seems to see it that way. Tucumcari voters may be going to the polls in a couple of months at a cost to the city between $6,000 and $7,000 to...

  • All comes down to 'basic freedom'

    David Stevens, Editor|Mar 22, 2017

TUCUMCARI - Keith Hayes just wants to be left alone. After all, he's not bothering anybody. He understands some people view his property as unkempt and unsightly, but when you're in the concrete and trucking business for 30-something years, stuff piles up. He made sure he opened Hayes Trucking and Concrete in an area zoned for heavy industrial work. At 74 and retired since December, he can't miraculously transform the rusty old trucks and trailers he built a life with into a serene garden spot overnight. And so he's fighting city hall, which...

  • Lions Club has long history of community service

    Alisa Boswell, Portales managing editor|Mar 22, 2017

FLOYD — It all started in 1917 with 38-year-old Chicago business leader Melvin Jones telling members of his local business club that they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities. In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." The rest is history. And it was this history that drew Floyd Lions Club member Wade Carter into joining his local Lions Club. “I’ve always been concerned about donatin...
