  • Park coming into focus

    Ron Warnick|Apr 3, 2019

Proposed redevelopment of Five Mile Park west of Tucumcari came more into focus during meetings Thursday of the park's planning committee. Among the top ideas presented to the Tucumcari City Commission on Thursday evening were artist's renderings of the old Route 66 park being converted into several uses - a shooting-sports area, nonmotorized trails, a children's adventure area, a walking trail, an ATV or motorcycle area, an area for drone-flying or paintball activities, overflow parking and a...

Lake was named interim director after the MainStreet board fired its executive director, Gail Houser, in February. Lake said Doug Quarles, Tucumcari's best-known muralist, has nearly completed a work on a breezeway wall on Main Street downtown. He also noted...

  • NRA banquet sells short

    Ron Warnick|Apr 3, 2019

The 11th annual Quay County Friends of National Rifle Association Banquet on Saturday drew nearly 480 people but proved to be less than a sellout - an indication residents are less up-in-arms about gun-control bills in the state Legislature than they were just weeks ago. Kent Terry, the event's chairman, reported at the end of the banquet at the Tucumcari Convention Center a total of 475 tickets had been sold - short of a sellout total of 525. Terry said if the banquet had been a few weeks...

  • Health forum seeks to educate

    Ron Warnick|Apr 3, 2019

In some cases, Quay County residents aren't lacking in certain healthcare services so much as they don't know they exist in the first place. That lack of knowledge surfaced several times from about 50 Quay County residents who attended a health forum March 26 at the county fairgrounds. The forum was designed to set priorities and strategies for the next three years at Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital and its operator, Presbyterian Healthcare Services. The Quay County Health Council also presided...

  • Udall's presence in delegation will be missed

    Albuquerque Journal|Apr 3, 2019

It’s hard to imagine New Mexico without Tom Udall in elected office. Nearly 30 years have passed since the now-70-year-old was first voted in as New Mexico’s attorney general. He went on to win a seat in New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District in 1998, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014 and is currently the most senior member of the state’s Congressional delegation. Udall’s announcement last week he will leave the Senate in 2020 at the end of his current term puts a period on government service for the “Kennedys of the West” — Udall is the...

  • Still too early to make conclusions

    Steven Hansen|Apr 3, 2019

No one except William Barr and Robert Mueller, to our knowledge, has seen the Mueller report. We have seen Barr’s ultra–brief summary. Why, then, is everybody making stupendous leaps to conclusions about what’s in it? If they asked, and they won’t, here’s the advice I would give to principals in the whole sticky issue: President Trump: Remember George W. Bush standing on the deck of the U.S. Abraham Lincoln with that huge “Mission Accomplished” banner behind him when our Mideast troubles were just beginning. Nothing has ended. Barr says the...

  • NM leading environmental movement

    Tom McDonald|Apr 3, 2019

When America’s youth began to rebel against the Vietnam War, it was because young men were being drafted. They were on the cutting edge of the issue, so they rose up in defiance. Something similar is happening now, only it’s not one particular war, nor is it just one nation’s youths. This time, it’s climate change and young people all over the world are demanding change. Maybe you’ve heard in the news about Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old Swedish girl who, outside her home country’s parliament, staged the first school strike for the climate. Fo...

  • Tucumcari falls to Santa Rosa

    Staff report|Apr 3, 2019

The Tucumcari baseball team's offense continued to be low gear during an 8-1 loss at rival Santa Rosa on March 26. The Rattlers, who fell to 1-5, have scored just one run in four of its losses and two runs in another loss. Against Santa Rosa, Tucumcari left nine runners on base. However, Tucumcari coach Dwayne Roberts saw hopeful signs during the loss to the Lions. "This was a good game, but the score may not reflect it," he said. "The players even felt after the game that it was some of our...

Felicity Lopez drove in five runs, including two in the sixth inning, to help lead the Tucumcari softball team to a come-from-behind 11-6 victory March 26 over Santa Rosa. The Lady Rattlers, who improved to 4-0, led 7-6 at the bottom of the sixth when they scored four insurance runs for winning pitcher Jayden Jimenez. Lopez hit a two-run double during the rally, and Jasmine Jones added another RBI. "Felicity came up big for us again," Tucumcari coach CJ Oglesby, noting her strong performance...
