  • Thomas: Need to take more time to catch up with people

    Apr 9, 2013

I was wondering the other day about how long has it been since I had called a friend or family member for the sheer sake of just doing so. Now, don't get me wrong, I text a lot of family and friends all the time. In fact, many of them will probably tell you I talk too much as it is anyway. No, what I am talking about is calling someone just to say hi and maybe catch up on what's going on in his or her lives. What brought this on is a discussion I had with a friend about how our fathers will call at random times of any given day just to say hi...

  • Comments from the canyons: Privilege to listen to someone who lived history

    Apr 9, 2013

Recently, we have visited about the different calls I have received about our area history and the fun I have had in trying to find a few answers. Most such calls come from younger people who have the notion that I am almost as old at the mountain. Frequently, they want to know about happenings in the early 1900's and seem almost surprised that I wasn't around to witness such events. Last week, I was most honored to receive a call from Rachel Sparks, who still maintains her home at lma but who now lives with her daughter in Clovis. Rachel and...

  • Notes from the church lady: Lonely being cut off from world

    Apr 9, 2013

"...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least...ye have done it unto me." Matthew 25:40 Just over a month ago, Mark and I took a trip through Kansas. We were heading towards Lebanon, Kansas, the geographic center of the continental United States and thought it might make an interesting side trip. It was a cold, snowy day that grew worse the farther we traveled east. I read a brochure on the marker of the exact location and was disappointed to learn it was off the beaten path. With the weather we were traveling through I decided there... Full story

More than a dozen residents attended the Arch Hurley Conservancy District meeting Tuesday to speak with state and federal legislators about Conchas Lake levels. • Crowing roosters, chiming bells and change

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Apr 9, 2013

I woke up in my Key grandparents' old house in Robert Lee, Texas, this morning. My maternal grandparents had the good sense to live here all of their lives. A couple of times a year, for over thirty years, my brothers and I have gathered here, a gaggle of pastoral Shelburnes somewhat off-duty. I like to wake up here, even though the rooster who lives across the "patch" could use a short "For Dummies" course on "Ways and Means of Knowing When the Sun Actually Rises." His vocal apparatus could do with a little lubrication, too. But I've grown fon...
