  • The days encounters can have many outcomes

    Thomas Garcia|Apr 10, 2012

You just never know what you're going to get when the door opens and you start the day. Loralei Rupe Sanchez, begins the paper work to help a customer Tuesday morning at the Motor Vehicle Department at the Village of Logan. Those are the thoughts of Loralei Rupe Sanchez, as she started another work day serving the residents of Logan in the Motor Vehicle Department. I could only imagine what it would be like serving as a clerk for the MVD. I won't lie, I don't like going to the MVD. It always seems like there is a long wait and it's going to...

  • Scale of casualties makes Titanic compelling still

    Debra Whittington|Apr 10, 2012

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me"... Psalm 23:4 One hundred years ago 2,223 people sailed on the "unsinkable" Titanic bound for New York. They put their faith in the largest man-made object in the world at the time as they set out from Southampton England on this ill-fated voyage. On board were people of all walks of life from the firemen shoveling coal in the bowels of the ship to the richest man, John J. Astor IV. In between were people of various classes and...

  • Wisconsin GOP Gov. Walker needs to stay

    Apr 10, 2012

Few people should be surprised that a recent poll of Wisconsin Republicans shows 82 percent of them approve of embattled GOP Gov. Scott Walker. Or that the state's liberals — led by Democrats and their union labor leaders who create smear and fear in equal measure — have targeted him in a June 5 recall election. Last winter Walker used his bully pulpit to weaken collective bargaining of state employees. The action ended seniority and tenure for public school teachers; they can be hired or fired (and paid) based on performance. And state emp...

  • Easter Bunny still creepy to me

    Karl Terry|Apr 10, 2012

I've got to say I've always been a little creeped out by the Easter Bunny. Santa Claus might be a little scary to little kids but at least his looks make a little bit of sense. A six-foot rabbit makes no sense at all and freaks out more youngsters than not. I remember one Saturday shortly before Easter several years back when a coworker's little boy arrived at the office with an Easter basket full of eggs and tear-stained cheeks. He obviously wasn't having a good day. "What happened, a big kid push Trevor down in the rush for Easter Eggs or...

  • Poetry still tugs at my heartstrings

    Lynn Moncus|Apr 10, 2012

Not long ago, a friend asked if I had heard of the poem, "The Barefoot Boy." For once, I was able to say I surely had heard of it and even managed to quote a line. The friend then asked if I might be able to locate a copy, to which I replied I probably could. Of course, I put off that task for an embarrassing amount of time. Finally I went into my book room, sat down, and looked around at the three walls of books. My eye fell on the most logical place to look for that poem by John Greenleaf Whittier — the set of JUNIOR CLASSICS. A LIBRARY F...
