    Christina Calloway CMI staff writer|Apr 16, 2013

A meeting to discuss the $500 million Ute Water Pipeline Project escalated into a screaming match Friday in Portales between residents who oppose the project and local officials addressing their concerns. At one point police — who were asked by city officials to attend the meeting for security reasons — asked an audience member to control himself or he would be removed from the meeting. Members of the Concerned Citizens of Curry and Roosevelt Counties made their plea, often times with yelling and passionate discourse, asking the Eastern New...

  • Lopez statue great idea, with private dollars

    Apr 16, 2013

Government should spend public money on projects that benefit the public — not on monuments honoring iconic sports figures. We're not sure what our Legislature was thinking when it allocated $150,000 to build a statue honoring golf legend Nancy Lopez in her hometown of Roswell. We're glad Gov. Susana Martinez was thinking, and watching out for the public interest, when she vetoed the project, along with about 70 other "capital improvement" projects totaling $4.4 million. As popular as Nancy Lopez is and the standing she enjoys among New M... Full story

Mares said Moldenhauer has 30 days... Full story

  • Thomas: Chance to meet Michigan couple worthwhile

    Apr 16, 2013

This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting a nice couple from Michigan who not only enjoyed Tucumcari, they took time to support the class of 2016. Like many travelers who come to our city, they had a little trouble pronouncing its name. I worked as a clerk at a fuel station for several years so I've become used to this and am always ready to help people pronounce Tucumcari. Mel Townsend was sitting in the Elks Lodge eating a bowl of spaghetti and could have possibly just been photographed as another local, until a parent of a senior pointed...

  • Lauriault: Forgiveness something that can be extended

    Apr 16, 2013

I needed help recently in a critical situation and one of our children stepped up to meet the need. I was proud of him and appreciative so I promised he could watch a movie by himself in the basement free of any distraction by his siblings. That's actually the favor he did — distracting his siblings with a movie downstairs so I could finish my most recent newspaper article. You know me; I worked that incident into another article and might get two out of it. Here's the rest of the story. The free movie reward was given on Saturday. By Sunday m...

  • Comments from the canyons: Sometimes it's hard to discipline a pet

    Apr 16, 2013

Several friends have asked about Prissy, the large black lab, who lives on this corner. They have mentioned seeing her with me in the car and have said that she sits taller than I as she directs traffic from the passenger's seat. She also greets people from the backyard by placing her paws on the fence and barking at anyone in her line of vision. She tries very hard to be seen and heard. She likes to be admired and is eager to make new friends as we wander around the area. She really is one of the friendliest dogs I have ever taken orders...

  • What do hotel pool alligators eat?

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Apr 16, 2013

I might as well admit it: I am one tired alligator. My three grandkids and I were paddling around in a hotel swimming pool when my oldest granddaughter, the six-year-old beautiful Queen Alexandria, decided that I should be an alligator. The other two, the four-year-old magic faerie princess and the almost two-year-old handsome elf prince, agreed. Fine. Those little folks and I discovered a long time ago that when we're together, it's not at all unusual for me to morph into a unicorn, or a pony, or, on the darker side, even a dragon or an orc....
