  • Surviving the burn

    Leonard Lauriault|May 15, 2019

Our locally owned restaurants have rightful claim(s) to fame. While we might debate in our household over where to eat, or not eat fast food for a while, there’s seldom, if ever, any debate about where to have a sit-down meal because they all have multiple choices of good food (we might struggle within over our own personal selection at any given time or eatery). A specialty of local Cornerstone’s is Mercy Me, a pie made with Carolina reaper, Trinidad scorpion and bhut jolokia chili peppers. These are the three hottest known peppers with 2.2...

  • In Nixon vs. Trump, Nixon wins

    Steve Hansen|May 15, 2019

The investigation into Russian involvement in President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign has inevitably been compared to the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon in 1974. The same fierce battles are raging and both sides are using means both fair and foul. The presidents, however, are a stark contrast. If I had to choose between them, Nixon would win hands down. Nixon grew up poor in California towns. Trump was born rich and stayed that way in spite of huge business losses. Nixon made his own way through Whittier College a h...

  • There's hope for future after all

    Tom McDonald|May 15, 2019

I just finished doing a final read of high school seniors’ summaries. That’s something my newspaper compiles from surveys we pass out to the soon-to-be graduates and then publish on the eve of their commencement. It’s uplifting to read about these teenagers’ hope and dreams for the future — and worrisome because of what they’re going to face as adults. They may not realize what they’re facing in the world ahead. These are small-town youths, filled with the optimism that comes from supportive parents, grandparents and others who love them. Th...

  • Control of public square by social media troubling

    Albuquerque Journal|May 15, 2019

Most rational people could quickly stipulate Alex Jones is a conspiracy nut, Milo Yianopolous is a provocateur who solicited neo-Nazi and white supremacist figures for feedback and story ideas and Louis Farrakhan has a history of anti-Semitism as a minister who heads the religious group Nation of Islam. And rational people could also quickly agree banning them on social media sites really doesn’t damage public discourse one bit. As private entities, Facebook and Twitter can make the case they have the right to decide who can and can’t be on...

However, the Rattlers finished a somewhat disappointing fifth place with 39 points in the Class 3A team standings and just a few points away from the runner-up spot. Coach Wayne Ferguson attributed that to a hamstring injury Josh Chavez suffered during the...

  • Lady Rattlers' comeback bid falls short

    Ron Warnick|May 15, 2019

The Tucumcari softball team made a comeback bid from a double-digit deficit but fell 17-14 to Hatch Valley in its first-round Class 3A playoff game played over a two-day period at Rattler Field because of rain. On Wednesday, the ninth-seeded Bears (13-10) blasted six home runs to take a 13-2 lead over the eighth-seeded Lady Rattlers (17-5) when umpires suspended the game after four innings because of lightning and heavy rain. When the game resumed Thursday, the Lady Rattlers scored four runs in...
