The duo surrendered to police after a two-hour standoff in the upside-down car. • Commission mum on sixth license

    Ron Warnick|May 22, 2019

The New Mexico Racing Commission didn’t give any signals about how it leaned regarding a sixth license during its latest meeting Thursday, but a key member of a group wanting to build a racetrack and casino in Tucumcari cautioned it is too early to be critical about inactivity on the matter. “There was really no discussion about the racetrack, the sixth license,” said Warren Frost, one of the principals at Coronado Partners that wants to build an $80 million racino in Tucumcari. “As far as the commission giving guidance, they didn’t do that....

  • Quay County experiencing cell tower issues

    Ron Warnick|May 22, 2019

Disabled Tucumcari resident Derrick Matthews endures muscular dystrophy, diabetes and heart problems that require him to make frequent phone calls to set up appointments with Albuquerque doctors and arrange transportation there. Since late April, making those phone calls has proven impossible or time-consuming because the Tucumcari area lost the Sprint cellular signal required to operate both his cellphones. One is a Boost Mobile phone; the other is an Assurance phone. Both require a Sprint...

  • Surveillance program's loss good for privacy

    Los Angeles Times|May 22, 2019

A surveillance program that allows the U.S. government to comb through hundreds of millions of Americans’ telephone records in search of connections to terrorism could soon be a thing of the past. That would be good news for personal privacy and responsible intelligence-gathering. Reports in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal suggest that the National Security Agency has lost its enthusiasm for a program that is the successor to the massive “bulk collection” of telephone records revealed six years ago by Edward Snowden. Luke Murry...

  • Series over, but Game of Thrones lives

    Steve Hansen|May 22, 2019

It’s over. The “Game of Thrones” television series, which has treated viewers to epic-movie-quality episodes for eight years, aired its final cliff-hanging installment on Sunday. I didn’t watch it. I’m too cheap to subscribe to cable or satellite television or to pay the added fee for HBO. I’ll see it later, when the DVDs for Season 8 are available at reduced rates. I did manage to watch the first seven seasons through means both fair and foul. I also have managed to read the books on which the series was based, the five existing novels in t...

  • Adapting only way to handle change

    Tom McDonald|May 22, 2019

Today’s topic is change. It makes the world go round, but a lot of people hate it anyway. Change is inevitable, and yet the older we get, the more we’re inclined to resist it. It can be evolutionary or revolutionary, and it always has its share of detractors and proponents. Change is seldom without controversy. By its own definition, it causes friction. And nowadays, it comes at a blinding pace. More changes have come to the human experience in the last 50 years than has occurred in a thousand years prior. We barely have time to get used to...

  • Pastor: Evil must be resisted

    Gordan Runyan|May 22, 2019

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor in Germany during the rise of the Nazi regime. He was imprisoned and hanged for his involvement in a plot to kill Hitler. As he watched the National Socialists rise to power and begin their reign of terror, he struggled greatly with the theological question, “What is the Christian’s responsibility when facing a government that is actively destroying its own people?” This is no new question. Neither has it grown irrelevant with the passing of time. It’s still a qu...
