  • Faith helped get Americans through tough times

    Debra Whittington QCS columnist|Jun 5, 2012

"Be strong and of a good courage..." Joshua 1:6 This past weekend I watched a documentary covering the time period from the stock market crash through the 1930's. It was interesting as it incorporated actual news reels of the day. Updated, much of it was the same subject material of today. One of the reasons the stock market suffered was due to greed and people buying on margin. However it survived and is still in existence today. During the 1930's our part of the country was in the midst of a severe drought, even worse than what we are experie...

  • Veterinarian offered shelter to animals over the years

    Sharna Johnson QCS correspondent|Jun 5, 2012

Over the years, Dr. Jean Corey gave shelter to animal after animal. Sometimes it was because an owner died or was placed in a nursing home, sometimes people brought their animals in for care and just never came back, and most often people in the community brought animals in that they had found, hoping they could have a chance at something else. Whether left in a box in front of the hospital door — sometimes with a bag of food, most times not — or left at the hospital by owners that couldn't pay the bill, Corey said she worked to find homes for...

CLOVIS — A biodiesel producer at the Clovis Industrial Park is setting up to sell its product locally. Renewable Energy Group is prepping a wholesale terminal at the plant, with product available for delivery in July. Alicia Clancy, corporate affairs manager for REG, said the terminal will have an inventory capacity of 500,000 gallons, with three tiers of potential consumers — petroleum refineries, petroleum wholesalers and companies with large trucking fleets that keep diesel on site. "The facility right now, as it stands, is 40 percent (co...

  • Editorial: Government needs reminder of responsibilities

    Clovis Media Inc|Jun 5, 2012

Now that we've narrowed the field for our next set of elected representatives, let's remind them all what they're supposed to be doing on our behalf: Securing our unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Three recent news stories suggest they need a good reminding. Somehow we doubt the Founding Fathers would have approved of today's government efforts to imprison Roger Clemens, make chicken pens bigger or outlaw Big Gulps. It's not that we necessarily approve of the baseball pitcher's antics, tiny spaces for critters,...

  • Hope children rediscover fun of playing outside

    Lynn Moncus QCS columnist|Jun 5, 2012

Last week while driving around town, I nearly wrecked the car when I saw a couple of young children playing softball on a vacant lot. The ball and bat were much in use, and a lot of running was going on. Laughter was most pleasant to hear as the batter would miss the ball or hit it over the pitcher's head so he would have to run a distance to retrieve it. I rolled down the window in order to hear that laughter and the shouts between the two as they were having such fun. As I drove on by, I considered the scene and thought about how usual such...
