  • Officials to add new language to zoning

    Steve Hansen, QCS correspondent|Jul 7, 2021

Language will be added to Tucumcari zoning laws to accommodate growing, processing and retail sales of marijuana products for recreation, the Tucumcari City Commission decided in a special meeting on Thursday. While commissioners did not specify the wording, the commission decided to keep current city zones in place, especially commercial, agricultural and zones, but to add language that applies directly to cannabis-based production and sales. The commission also decided to include mixed-use zoning that would allow a business owner to live on...

Did Route 66 once run through Tucumcari's Main Street? Mike Lee, producer and creator of the Fast TV Network, said while making a funding pitch at a May meeting of a city Lodgers Tax Board meeting it was his belief Main Street once carried Route 66 and vowed to prove it with an upcoming episode of his channel's "Legends...

  • United we stand; divided we fall

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Jul 7, 2021

Over this past weekend, Americans celebrated that, for 245 years, we’ve been free of governmental tyranny. Throughout our history, we’ve continued to fight against one form of tyranny or another, either against another country or ourselves, the latter of which led to the greatest trauma because almost as many Americans died during the Civil War (the one against ourselves) than all others combined. After nearly every war, though, the wounds have been allowed to heal and the opposing nations have become our allies. While significant progress has...

A Tucumcari native has fulfilled his dream of acquiring the city’s oldest restaurant after working there as a young teenager. Chase Waters, 30, closed the deal Wednesday on Del’s Restaurant, which has operated on Route 66 since 1956. He celebrated the acquisition the next day with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting organized by the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce. Waters also moved to Tucumcari last week from Amarillo. The previous owners, sisters Yvette Peacock and Yvonne Braziel, had owned the restaurant for more than 26 years. Yve...

  • Donald Rumsfeld personified idea of never quitting

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Jul 7, 2021

In the mid-2000s, I spent two years as senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, acting essentially as his military gatekeeper and translating his orders to the U.S. military via the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Before joining his team, I had been a Navy one-star admiral and commander of Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, in charge of 10,000 sailors and a dozen ships in combat in the Arabian Gulf. I mention that because my duties suddenly shifted from a pinnacle of command at sea to overseeing administrative misery: making...

  • Reasonable climate measures can't hurt

    Steve Hansen, QCS correspondent|Jul 7, 2021

It’s Friday and it has been raining in Tucumcari for three days straight. While I would have welcomed the thrill and sense of risk that comes with a thunderstorm, the rain we’ve been getting for three days is more of what we need, a few days of steady drizzle, enough to soak into the ground and rescue withering crops and replenish the Canadian River. The benefit to me is that the weeds in my weedy yard are easier to pull. The Canadian River replenishes Conchas and Ute lakes. This summer Conchas Lake has looked like a smaller version of the ema...

  • Revolution undeservedly under fire

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Jul 7, 2021

It’s been a hard time for the American Revolution. It’s been smeared by The New York Times 1619 project as a fight to preserve slavery. Juneteenth, a worthy event in its own right, is considered by some as a candidate to replace July 4, marking a supposedly more palatable and less flawed Independence Day. Statues of leaders of the Revolution have been vandalized and torn down. This is wrongheaded, ungrateful and destructive. Ours is the greatest revolution the world has ever known. It succeeded where so many others have failed, delivered a sev...
