  • Watchful eye needed to avoid interest conflicts

    Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 9, 2017

The smaller the town, the more difficult it can be to avoid potential conflicts of interest. Sometimes the sheriff is related to the prosecutor and the judge. Sometimes the city manager is a volunteer firefighter for the city. Or a county commissioner sells goods/services to the same county because that commissioner provides the best quality for the best price. It’s difficult to criticize a small-town public servant for filling a role nobody else wants because it’s a lot of work for little (or no) pay. But small towns cannot close their col...

  • Conservatives reaping their sowing

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Aug 9, 2017

I don’t know what it is with these U.S. senators from Arizona. They keep turning out to be mavericks. First, Sen. John McCain, a Republican, cast one of the deciding votes that wrecked the GOP’s “skinny” Obamacare repeal/replace. He’s now being called a traitor. Now comes Rep. Jeff Flake, with sterling conservative credentials, who has published a book that lambastes President Donald Trump. He’s being called a traitor, too, even though he titled his book “The Conscience of a Conservative,” which far from accidentally echoes the title of a book...

  • Popular phrases don't equal policy

    Rube Render, Columnist|Aug 9, 2017

The James A. Farley Post Office in New York City was opened in 1914 and has the inscription, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Contrary to what many of us have believed since childhood, this is not the motto of the U.S. Postal Service. The sentence comes from the Greek historian Herodotus and celebrates a system of mounted postal messengers created by the Persians. U.S. Postal policy is not based on this...

Recognition for winning the 3A boys track and field championship is an honor but more of a testament to the commitment of the athletes and coaches, said Wayne Ferguson, Rattlers head track and field coach.
