Mesalands Community College received word last week it will receive a $2 million endowment for the college’s forthcoming nursing program. Shannon Fries, the college’s director of nursing, told the Mesalands board of trustees during its Aug. 23 meeting she was informed that day about the endowment from the New Mexico Higher Education Department. New Mexico State Police officers are investigating a teen’s drowning at Ute Lake in Logan. According to a news release, state police were sent at 9:53 a.m. Monday to Ute Lake for a 17-year-old boy who had gone into the water and not resurfaced. The state police dive team spent the day searching, suspended the search as darkness approached and resumed it at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Required financial audits of the City of Tucumcari and Mesalands Community College are more than eight months late, landing both on the state auditor’s at-risk list and the possibility of a loss of state funds. The City of Tucumcari announced it would impose a crackdown on stray dogs for a two-week period starting Sept. 15 after several children were bitten by the roaming animals. | Any dog without the required tags will be confiscated by city police officers and “disposed in a humane manner and bury the same.” Tagged dogs will be impounded, and the owner can take possession after paying a fine of $2 a day. A Nevada teen died in a one-vehicle accident Thursday on Interstate 40 east of San Jon. According to a news release from New Mexico State Police, officers responded to a rollover accident on eastbound I-40 at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday.
