  • My first ... concert

    Jerrene Bradley QCS staff writer|Sep 4, 2012

We asked area residents about their first music concerts. This is what they said: • Stella Watson, 59, Tucumcari Ranch Supply: "My first concert was in Las Cruces at the Pan American Center. We saved our money for two months so we could go see Neil Diamond. It was great." • Patty Nelson, 45, employee at Security Finance: "My first concert was when I saw ZZ Top in Las Cruces at the Pan American Center. The lazer light show was the greatest. Each year recording artists of national acclaim perform at the festival. The lead act this year is Chubby Checker. He performs at 7 p.m. Saturday. Event coordinator Courtney Gano...

  • At labor or rest, we must remember time is limited

    Sep 4, 2012

Monday was Labor Day, signaling the end of summer. Although summer doesn't actually end until Sept. 22 this year, school started a little more than two weeks ago. While that's not very long, most students probably enjoyed Labor Day as a welcomed break or new lease on life (some children probably thought their life had ended when school started). Still, because Tucumcari has a four-day school week, and there's little room for time off, there's school this Friday to make up for the holiday. Life is like that. While no one knows exactly how much...

Northeast Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt. Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake...

  • Pet ownership not to be taken lightly

    Sep 4, 2012

People love pets. Let me rephrase that; pets have a welcome place in many households around the country. Approximately 1/3 of all homes in the U.S. have a cat or dog. It is a common response when students are asked why they chose to go into the veterinary medicine or vet tech professions, to say, "I just love little animals!" Psychologically it is possible for some humans to literally "love animals." They can develop an extreme attachment to them or, more likely, to one individual pet be it a dog, cat or horse. I would guess the preponderance...

  • Pioneers didn't have our luxuries

    Sep 4, 2012

I admire our country's 19th century pioneers for a lot of reasons. Facing down wild Indians, working hard and plowing with mules, cooking on a wood stove, communicating without Facebook and otherwise living life large. But stop some day when it's 105 degrees outside and wonder how they ever made do without air conditioning. All I can say is I'm pretty weak compared to my forefathers. This past week or so it became clear just how spoiled I am. First I cranked up the old evaporative coolers at the Merchants Building at the fairgrounds. Those...

  • Editorial: Horse abuse prosecution needs teeth

    Sep 4, 2012

Jess A Zoomin should have run in Monday's $2.4 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. But instead of racing for one of the sport's richest purses, the 2-year-old sorrel gelding had to be euthanized on Aug. 17 after breaking down at a race at the Ruidoso track. Jess A Zoomin had been the second-fastest qualifier for the Futurity and was one of nine horses that tested positive for the illegal Class A drug dermorphin during May 25 trials for upcoming high-stakes races. Five of those horses, including Jess A Zoomin, were trained by the sam...

  • Clovis coach gets record 311th win

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer|Sep 4, 2012

CLOVIS — As junior Steven Beckum plunged into the end zone, the cannon exploded for one final time Friday night in the south end zone of Leon Williams Stadium, and the only head coach Clovis has known since 1978 ascended to the top of the New Mexico wins list. In a game that quickly turned into a coronation of coach Eric Roanhaus, the Wildcats cruised by rebuilding Santa Fe Capital 55-0 in a game called midway through the third quarter. "I'm glad it's over," said Roanhaus, who has guided Clovis to 10 state titles and moved past Jim Bradley w...

  • Clovis has remote possibility of Amtrak service

    Sep 4, 2012

There's a remote possibility Amtrak could reroute passenger service through Clovis sometime within the next four years, according to a railroad spokesman. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the railroad is working with government agencies to find funding for maintaining deteriorating track along current routes for its Southwest Chief. The train carries passengers daily between Chicago and Los Angeles. Magliari said decisions and financial commitments to keep the current route intact will be needed by the end of 2014. If they are not in place,...

  • Peanut producer honored

    Alisa Boswell CMI staff writer|Sep 4, 2012

Sunland Peanuts Inc. of Portales was recognized as one of the top 100 privately-owned businesses in New Mexico last week at a luncheon in Albuquerque. The New Mexico Private 100 luncheon held Thursday was sponsored by Albuquerque businesses and recognized privately-owned businesses which largely impact New Mexico economy and create a high number of jobs. "We tend to lose sight of the fact that the smaller privately-owned businesses are the cornerstone, the baseline for employment in New Mexico," said Steven Keene, a regional partner with Moss...

  • Coyote patrol helps dairies avoid losses

    Alisa Boswell CMI staff writer|Sep 4, 2012

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services division has saved dairy operations and others in Curry and Roosevelt counties an estimated $2 million through a program that captures and kills coyotes, according to USDA officials. Brian Archuleta, New Mexico southeast district supervisor for the USDA, said coyotes are an issue for dairies because they kill and injure calves. Archuleta said there was $7,000 worth of actual damage done to Roosevelt County dairy calves in the last fiscal year (July 2011-June 2012) and more than $31,000...

  • Trip through county more than sightseeing

    Sep 4, 2012

Our Sunday drives into the country are most necessary for mental health and also provide great opportunities to appreciate nature. Because of the drought, we have seen very little wildlife and limited numbers of colorful wild flowers. As a result, we tend to appreciate any of the animals and plants we see more than ever. Recently I was able to watch a deer as she grazed on some elm leaves. She remained calm for several minutes, allowing me to take a few pictures and to admire her beauty She then threw her head back, took a flying leap, and was...

    Thomas Garcia QCS senior writer|Sep 4, 2012

The Tucumcari Rattlers will be looking to limit mistakes in their second game of the season against (0-1) New Mexico Military Institute. "We need to cut down on the mistakes and missed assignments," said Wayne Ferguson, Rattlers head football coach. Ferguson said the Rattlers (1-0) will be looking for a different game style from the Colts on Friday night, one week after a 35-13 win over Raton. He said the Colts threw the ball quite a bit, though that was primarily due to them falling behind early in their 49-14 loss to Hatch Valley. Ferguson sa...

A state police car turned onto First Street headed south. Carl Unruh came out of the post office carrying a big package. Tucumcari Lumber Company employee was seen moving...
