The Clovis Music Festival turns 25 on Thursday, and according to Randy Petty, its almost quarter century of existence offers proof of the city's significant influence on rock 'n' roll. The Clovis Music Festival was started in 1987 by Vi Petty, widow of Clovis musician and record producer Norman Petty. It offers live music celebrating the city's rock 'n' roll heritage. Monday was Labor Day, signaling the end of summer. Although summer doesn't actually end until Sept. 22 this year, school started a little more than two weeks ago. While that's not very long, most students probably enjoyed Labor Day as a welcomed break or new lease on life (some children probably thought their life had ended when school started). The Tucumcari Rattlers started the season Friday night with a 35-13 victory over the Raton Tigers at Rattler Stadium. The Rattlers did most of their damage on the ground, rushing 34 times for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Leading the way was Jeffery Cordova with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Jess A Zoomin should have run in Monday's $2.4 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. There's a remote possibility Amtrak could reroute passenger service through Clovis sometime within the next four years, according to a railroad spokesman. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the railroad is working with government agencies to find funding for maintaining deteriorating track along current routes for its Southwest Chief. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services division has saved dairy operations and others in Curry and Roosevelt counties an estimated $2 million through a program that captures and kills coyotes, according to USDA officials. Brian Archuleta, New Mexico southeast district supervisor for the USDA, said coyotes are an issue for dairies because they kill and injure calves. A New Mexico State Police officer was treated for minor injuries after his state police unit was struck head-on Monday night by an erratic driver from Clovis on U.S. Highway 54 near Logan, said Capt. Jimmy Glascock. Glascock said officer Joshua Campos and Severino Chavez, 19, of Clovis, were taken to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital. Our Sunday drives into the country are most necessary for mental health and also provide great opportunities to appreciate nature.
