  • Blue Swallow on sale block

    Ron Warnick|Sep 5, 2018

With mixed feelings, the owners of the Blue Swallow Motel - Tucumcari's most famous Route 66 motel - said they have decided to put up the property for sale as their eighth tourist season there comes to an end. Co-owners Kevin and Nancy Mueller announced the listing on Facebook last week. The Michigan natives bought the motel in 2011 and made numerous improvements to the property, including new plumbing, new subfloors, new tankless water heaters and, most recently, a new roof. Hamilton Reality...

  • Gross-receipts tax impacts Trigg, Logan clinic

    Ron Warnick|Sep 5, 2018

The administrator at Tucumcari’s hospital said the facility would be forced to cut expenses — including possibly jobs and medical services — if Quay County voters in November reject a renewal of the gross-receipt tax for the hospital. The current one-eighth percent tax raises about $200,000 a year to help operate Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital. Quay County commissioners in late August voted to put the tax-renewal measure on the Nov. 6 general-election ballot. The tax first was approved during a special election in 1987. A new state law requi...

  • Success and failure in good deeds

    Leonard Lauriault|Sep 5, 2018

Some time ago, the basement smelled musty the next morning after cleaning the carpets. So I opened windows to air it out and by the following evening the smell was almost gone and everything turned out alright. This reminded me that sometimes when you try to do something good, it seems to backfire, although this time it did work out, eventually. I won’t stop trying to do good although I’ve gotten burned before and I know it’ll happen again. I’ve failed many times as a do-gooder, but God hasn’t given up on me and never will even though I...

  • Much more work needed on clergy sex abuse cover-up

    Sep 5, 2018

For those in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church who thought the fallout from clergy sex abuse scandals was over and dealt with, it is clear they were sadly mistaken. Public outrage has been renewed by stunning new developments, including accusations by a former high-ranking Vatican official who said Pope Francis himself looked the other way in violation of his “zero tolerance” policy on sex abuse. Meanwhile, a Pennsylvania grand jury under the state attorney general issued an exhaustive report on sexual misconduct by over 300 “pr...

  • I prefer slow pace of New Mexico

    Steve Hansen|Sep 5, 2018

I visited my old home state of California, more specifically the Los Angeles area, last week. Here are some of the things I learned: • The Los Angeles area is enjoying a pleasant late summer. It’s cooler and drier than eastern New Mexico. • The crowded freeways can choke to a halt any time of the day. People drive big cars and SUVs on the freeways and they go way too fast. • There were two terrible accidents on the freeways. One involved an illegal street race. Three persons died in that crash. Another, which killed two people, involve...

  • Rattlers top Albuquerque Academy 44-0

    Ron Warnick|Sep 5, 2018

Tucumcari's speed in the backfield and on defense overwhelmed a young Albuquerque Academy team 44-0 on Friday night during the Rattlers' home football opener. The Rattlers (1-1) passed the ball only twice - mostly because they didn't need to amid 359 yards rushing. Seth Martinez led Tucumcari with 159 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Robbie Hartmann ran for 95 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. "We lost to a clearly superior team," longtime Academy coach Kevin Carroll said....

LOGAN — Three teams from Quay County advanced to the semifinals of the annual Logan Lady Longhorn Volleyball Tournament, but it was a team from Texas that won it all Saturday. • Coyotes squeak by Lake Arthur

    Ron Warnick|Sep 5, 2018

With his team trailing with less than a minute left, Ethan Short of San Jon/Grady recovered an onside kick, then scored the winning touchdown as time expired in a 76-71 six-man football victory Friday at Lake Arthur that featured eight lead changes. The Coyotes (1-1) took leads of 44-26 and 52-32, but the Panthers (0-2) chipped away in the second half and seized a 71-64 advantage in the fourth quarter. Coyotes coach Adrian Jones acknowledged exhaustion played a role in his team's lead evaporating. But he also said his squad showed resilience, a...

  • Tough run for cross country Rattlers

    Sep 5, 2018

The Tucumcari boys team ran tightly bunched but well back of the pack over the 3-mile course during the season-opening Clovis Invitational cross-country meet Friday at Ned Houk Park in Clovis. The top Rattlers finisher was Josh Chavez, finishing 40th with a time of 21 minutes, 4 seconds. Teammates behind him were Charles Prieto (41st, 21:12), Manny Hernandez (43rd, 21:24), Alexander Lujan (50th, 23:47), Dwight Brown (55th, 25:30) and Britt Lusk (56th, 25:33). • Competitors wakesurf at Ute Lake

    Ron Warnick|Sep 5, 2018

LOGAN - More than 50 surfers tested their skills in Quay County, and they didn't even need an ocean to do it. Ute Lake on Sunday hosted its first wake-surfing event on a cove near the 12 Shores Golf Club. The lake itself didn't make big waves, but specially made boats create a wake a surfboarder can ride for up to hundreds of feet behind the boat. Laurie Strebeck, co-owner of Beck's Boats in Logan with her husband Layne, said she was hoping for 20 participants for the inaugural event. Instead, i...
