  • Lauriault: God's requests will never surpass your ability

    Sep 6, 2017

School has started so watch out for the young’uns as they walk to school or wait for the bus. As we’re getting back into the swing of things, particularly, trying to be ready when the bus comes, I’m reminded of an incident that took place near the end of the last school year. We were under a plague of flies and while waiting for the bus one morning, our grandson came to me and stated proudly and with determination, “I crushed one of those big flies; one down, a lot to go!” That reminded me of a sermon illustration I heard years ago: A little...

  • Residents take trip to help Harvey victims

    David Grieder|Sep 6, 2017

PORTALES - Tyler Lucas intended to bring a single small trailer of supplies for the hurricane-stricken communities on the Texas Gulf Coast. He started that effort Thursday morning, and by Sunday evening he and four others departed for Houston hauling about 40,000 pounds of water and food. "I said if I was going to go down there I might as well take some supplies with me, and it kind of just blew up from there," said Lucas, a Clovis firefighter. "I was definitely surprised by the support we got...

  • Wilson: Great deeds don't need PR campaign

    Sep 6, 2017

“The purest form of giving is anonymous to anonymous. We gon’ make it there, I promise this.” — Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, “Nickels and Dimes” I wasn’t sure what to say about Monday, when a Clovis teenager walked into Clovis-Carver Public Library with a pair of handguns, and exacted revenge for who-knows-what against people he’d never met — fatally shooting two beloved librarians and injuring four others. There’s a helpless feeling knowing my words won’t matter — and it pains somebody who has built a career on words mattering to admit that. We...

  • Not so random acts

    Kevin Wilson|Sep 6, 2017

CLOVIS - Trae Clark believes in random acts, and he does them whenever he can. But he thinks the act he just finished Sunday wasn't random at all. The intricate series of events that put a jersey in his hands and Air Force-flown flags in two others, Clark said, all came together for a reason. "This is all God," Clark said. "This started at a Bible study." The Tennessee Titans website and social media accounts include clips of a flag presented to receiver and former Clovis High athlete Rishard...

    Jamie Cushman|Sep 6, 2017

ENMU (1-0) looked down-and-out when the Bearcats stopped a fourth-and-2 run by running back Kamal Cass and took over at the Greyhounds 19-yard line with three minutes left to play. That was before ENMU's defense...

The Lady Longhorns' 3-2 championship win over the Santa Fe Waldorf Lady Wolves was hard fought and will give the girls confidence as the season progresses, said Robert Young, Lady Longhorns head coach. • Holding budget hostage for wall makes no sense

    Sep 6, 2017

Last week, President Trump raised the possibility of shutting down the federal government unless Congress agrees to fund his “big, beautiful border wall” along the 1,989-mile U.S.-Mexico border — a wall he still says Mexico will pay for, despite repeated denials by the Mexican government. There’s little question border security is as important as it is non-existent. Border states like New Mexico that are dealing with drugs and crime know that better than anyone. But New Mexico is also highly dependent on federal jobs, and our workforce also kn...

  • Hansen: It's always good to be home

    Sep 6, 2017

By the time this column is published, I will be back from California. As I write, I haven’t left yet. You can make the drive to where I’m going, a few miles short of Los Angeles proper, in one hard day, which is what I intend to do. I’ve got some old friends who make an annual visit worth the effort, while reminding myself of why I left the smog-tarnished Golden State in the first place. As hot weather fades in our corner of New Mexico, it is just starting in the inland valleys near Los Angeles. I have one outdoor event to attend and my cell...

  • Render: Press still doesn't understand Trump's draw

    Sep 6, 2017

Whenever you see footage of our vaunted prime-time news reporters visiting a combat zone, take careful note of what they wear. For some reason they seem to believe that one item of clothing that is required to be a real honest to goodness combat correspondent is a shirt with epaulettes. Even better than that is some sort of bush jacket with the same accessory. Always conscience of the importance of appearances, reporters feel the need to look the part. Image is everything to reporters, and that may be why they ambushed First Lady Melania Trump...

    Thomas Garcia|Sep 6, 2017

After years of living in eastern New Mexico's climate, former Nara Visa resident could not believe the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which forced her family to evacuate their home. "I told my fiancé, 'I'm from New Mexico, I've never seen this much water at one time,'" said Dessaray Padilla, now of Baytown, Texas. Padilla, who moved from Nara Visa in 1998, said she is currently living in Baytown with her fiancee, Austin Wilson. She said the couple has been staying at the home of Wilson's...
