  • Respondents support preservation of lodge

    Ron Warnick|Sep 11, 2019

Respondents overwhelmingly supported proposals to fully or partially preserve the long-closed Conchas Lodge on the south side of Conchas Lake, according to findings from an open-records request to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that manages the property. The corps in July invited participation in a public scoping, or submitting feedback, on the possible future of Conchas Lodge. It was built in 1942 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and has been managed by the corps and New Mexico State...

  • Officials discuss election changes

    Ron Warnick|Sep 11, 2019

The county clerk and one commissioner during Monday’s Quay County Commission meeting discussed how new laws led to changes in the upcoming Nov. 5 nonpartisan local elections, prompting confusion from a few county residents. County Clerk Ellen White said no one sample ballot would be available because more than two-dozen election races in the county would produce about 50 different ballots. However, White said her office could print a sample ballot for each individual if he or she requested it. She said sample ballots also are generated at the N...

  • God's playbook

    Ron Warnick|Sep 11, 2019

Shortly after All-American tight end Mike Barber was drafted by the Houston Oilers, coach Bum Phillips told him he'd have to study and know the team's playbook because talent alone wasn't enough to stay in the NFL. Decades later, Barber told dozens of area athletes at a packed Father's Forge church in Tucumcari on Sept. 3 the value of "living a life in bounds" and held up a Bible, proclaiming it God's playbook. "If you don't know his playbook, you can't get to heaven," he said. After a 10-year N...

  • Football may come at too high a price

    Sep 11, 2019

When Colts quarterback Andrew Luck walked off the field for a final time on Aug. 24 — multiple injuries having convinced him that retirement from professional football at age 29 was the only sensible option — Colts fans booed. It was a stunning display given the quarterback’s past heroics on behalf of Indianapolis. This was the 2018 NFL Comeback Player of the Year who had previously overcome damage to his throwing shoulder as well as a concussion, leg injuries, a lacerated kidney and on and on. But the fans at Lucas Oil Stadium didn’t see a m...

  • Trump clear danger to democracy

    Steve Hansen|Sep 11, 2019

While President Trump’s hold on reality seems to fade daily, his hold on party power seems to be growing. South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas are apparently preparing to cancel Republican primaries to deflect any opposition to Trump’s re-nomination. In opposing this development, William Kristol, a notable anti-Trump conservative, last week said, “Trump is an authoritarian. Excusing and enabling authoritarianism corrupts.” Kristol, of all people, should know that authoritarianism has always been a hallmark of conservatism. Please hear me...

  • California could learn from Kenya

    Sep 11, 2019

In the early 1970s California was America’s Nirvana. It was a sunny, well-run, happy and free-spirited place of limitless opportunity where half the young people in Flyover Country wanted to move to, enjoy and spend the rest of their lives. At the time, California’s government was a model for every other state. Its infrastructure, educational system and growing economy were top notch. But that was a long, long political time ago. Since then, the California Dream has been transformed into the California Nightmare by Democrats and their lib...

    Ron Warnick|Sep 11, 2019

  • In God's world, cheaters are losers

    Gordan Runyan|Sep 11, 2019

Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.” The word “abomination” there is a strong term. While it is true that all sin is sin, it is also true that some sins are more strongly denounced. In this case, the Hebrew word that appears in the ancient text signifies a sin that God finds particularly disgusting. So what is being said here? That God is a big stickler for accuracy in measuring devices? Not exactly: There is more at stake. The only...
