  • Trump correct to end DACA, force solution

    Albuquerque Journal|Sep 13, 2017

As expected, the Trump administration announced Tuesday it will phase out the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. It protected from deportation nearly 800,000 young immigrants who as children were brought here illegally by their parents. Although the DACA rollback was announced by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Trump said in a statement, “… I am not going to just cut DACA off, but rather provide a window of opportunity for Congress to finally act.” That window is six months long, after which the feder...

  • Aspersions cast on media harmful

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Sep 13, 2017

As I write this, the latest example of “fake news” was slamming into Naples, Florida, on its way to Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida, where its mythical high winds and over-hyped storm surges were causing some very real damage throughout the Florida peninsula. Rush Limbaugh wasn’t there. He decided this threat the media had conjured up just might be real after all and evacuated his Florida home in Miami. On Sept. 5, he implied that the hurricane warnings were being hyped to advance the “climate change” agenda, hinting that the power of the appro...

  • Thankfully, Trump's no politician

    Rube Render, Columnist|Sep 13, 2017

When you ask a political operative a question, the politico will pause and run that question through some sort of filter in his head prior to answering. If you reach that person by phone, he is apt to say, “I’m in a meeting right now, but I’ll get back to you later today.” They rarely answer on the spur of the moment because the answer can come back to bite them. How many times have you heard a friend or acquaintance say, “Just once I’d like to hear a politician answer a question honestly, w...

  • Rattlers face Dexter Friday at home

    Thomas Garcia, Staff Writer|Sep 13, 2017

The key to stopping the Dexter Demons Friday will be to contain their dynamic quarterback, while limiting mental mistakes and following through on responsibilities, said Wayne Ferguson, Rattlers head coach. “We are a half-step away from being a dominant program,” Ferguson said. Ferguson said the Sept. 8 road loss to the Estancia Bears (30-6) was a lot better than what the score board reflects. He said the team played with the seasoned, physical Bears team throughout the first half. The Rattlers (1-2) trailed 6-0 at the half. “As the game progr...

SILVER CITY — In a battle between Eastern New Mexico’s prolific rush attack and Western New Mexico’s vaunted passing attack, it was a battle of turnovers and a little bit of special teams that helped the Greyhounds notch a 37-34 road victory Saturday afternoon at Ben Altamirano Field. • Time to think rightly about disaster

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Sep 13, 2017

There are few things more human than our tendency to ask, “Why me?” in response to suffering, tragedy, or calamity. We see it asked and answered several times in the Bible, specifically in the books of Job, Psalms, and Proverbs. Jesus Christ dealt with another common response to disaster. In Luke 13:1-5, people came to him to report a contemporary incident, in which the Roman governor, Pilate, had killed some Galilean Jews at the Temple, causing their blood to be “mingled” with that of their sla...
