The closing leaves the city with one drugstore — the former Wellborn Pharmacy that recently moved from its longtime South Second Street location near downtown to a bigger building on South First Street. Wellborn also changed its name to Mesa Winds Healthmart Pharmacy. Papers taped to the doors and windows of the Bestcare building at 511 S. Second St. stated: “We regret to inform you you the...

  • You have a right to a clean conscience

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Sep 21, 2022

Who is the master of your conscience? Or, who gets to define for you what is right and what is wrong? Who has the authority to tell you what you must believe to be true? If you could answer those questions in my hearing, you’d be telling me who your god is. And, let’s not get it twisted, as the kids say: If you named a human person, even one in your church, that human is your god. If you answered those questions with Me, Myself, and I, then we also know who your god really is. One of the outgrowths of the Bible’s teaching about our...

  • Cheese factory's latest honor was 'most special'

    Staff report|Sep 21, 2022

Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Factory has won a number of awards over the years, but a recent one held a lot of significance to its owner. The company’s Ithaki feta cheese earned third-place during the recent World Championship Cheese Contest in Milwaukee, with a score of 99.595. Owner Charles Krause, who has a picture of himself holding the plaque, only half-joked last week it was the only time he’d worn a suit and tie. “This one was the most special award in my life,” Krause said. “I’m pretty damned proud of it, and we’ve been...

The COVID Act Now website on Friday dropped Quay County’s risk rating for community spread from “medium” to “low.” Quay County’s rate of new cases dropped sharply to 121.2 cases per 100,000 people last week, compared to 218.1 the...

  • No water allocated despite lake's rise

    Staff report|Sep 21, 2022

Despite increases to Conchas Lake’s levels in the last two months, the Arch Hurley Conservancy District during its regular meeting last week again voted to not allocate water. The district is ending its second straight growing season without diverting lake water into its irrigation canals because of drought. District manager Franklin McCasland reported the lake received 15,309 acre-feet of water in August with just 2,181 acre-feet of evaporation and other losses. He said Conchas Lake’s elevation rose 3.68 feet during the month. Despite...

  • Justice right to defend Supreme Court legitimacy

    Las Vegas Review-Journal, Syndicated content|Sep 21, 2022

The best way for the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve its legitimacy is to ignore public opinion. This month, Chief Justice John Roberts made remarks defending the institution of the Supreme Court. It was his first public address since the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. “Simply because people disagree with an opinion is not a basis for criticizing the legitimacy of the court,” he said at an event in Colorado. He added, “You don’t want the political branches telling you what the law is. And you don’t want public opinion...

  • Politicians aren't better than you

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Sep 21, 2022

It seems it should be obvious to everyone by now: those who seek positions of political power can’t even run their own lives; they certainly shouldn’t be allowed to run yours. No one is less qualified to do so. Just look at the news. Locally, nationally, and internationally -- those with political power are drawn to criminal behavior like Junebugs to porch lights. They are not better than you. They are not smarter or wiser, more moral, or more expert. They aren’t entitled to decide how you should live your life. They shouldn’t have...

  • Our differences make us stronger

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Sep 21, 2022

The other day, I heard a pundit call New Mexico “purple,” as in a balanced mix of “blue” Democrats and “red” Republicans. If that’s the case, we must have some closeted Republicans holding office, because these days the Democrats control the political landscape. Republicans, however, aren’t that far removed from power. Not only do they control some conservative areas around New Mexico, it was only four years ago when a Republican was governor, so maybe a little purple is part of the equation after all. The fact is, New Mexico...

  • Lions maul Rattlers 54-0

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 21, 2022

Tucumcari's football faced a tall order Friday in slowing a Santa Rosa team that was beginning to click with its offense amid its flurry of fakes and misdirection plays. That tough task was made in impossible by penalties, bad snaps and other mistakes during a 54-0 non-district loss at Rattler Stadium. The game was halted early in the fourth quarter by the mercy rule. The Lions (3-2), who struggled early in the season, racked up almost 500 yards of offense against an often bewildered Rattler...
