  • Throng turns out for racino presentation

    Ron Warnick|Oct 10, 2018

Show up, they did. More than 1,100 people crammed into the Tucumcari Convention Center's main ballroom Thursday afternoon to hear Coronado Partners principals and their supporters make their pitch to the New Mexico Racing Commission to award the sixth and final horse-racing license to Tucumcari. The license would lead to an $80 million horse-racing track and casino, called Coronado Park, that would employ 400 people. Commission Chairman Ray Willis announced an official count of 1,140 people...

  • Quay could use racino boost

    Steve Hansen|Oct 10, 2018

At the risk of alienating real or potential readers in various parts of the state, I am using my space this week to advocate for my home town Tucumcari as the site of the state’s next racetrack-casino, or “racino.” Officially, of course, it’s an alliance of businesses called Coronado Partners that has applied for the license. The 1,100 Quay County residents who attended Thursday’s New Mexico Racing Commission hearing in Tucumcari on Coronado’s very professionally presented proposal, however, made it plain that Tucumcari and Quay County have...

    Ron Warnick|Oct 10, 2018

The city of Tucumcari’s Lodgers Tax Board is taking on more oversight of the operations and marketing efforts of the Tucumcari Convention Center and its director’s job description. Because lodging taxes fund the convention center, board Chairman David Brenner said during the board’s Wednesday meeting it should have “more input” into its operations. Brenner said the convention center needs to beef up marketing efforts to attract more lucrative conventions, such as those by municipal leagues and county officials. To do so, convention center di...

  • Location good argument for Tucumcari track

    Oct 10, 2018

If crowd size and enthusiasm were determining factors, the New Mexico Racing Commission could have rubber-stamped a horse-racing license to Tucumcari well before the end of Thursday’s hearing. It was hard for anyone to not be impressed by the more than 1,100 people who showed up at the Tucumcari Convention Center to express support for a proposed Coronado Park horse-racing track and casino on Tucumcari’s east side that would create 400 jobs. The presentation by Coronado Park’s principals often was greeted by spontaneous applause and even cheer...

At the beginning, we should define our terms. Let’s agree that gambling is playing at a game of chance by risking your own money for the opportunity to win more money back. Further, the biblical definition of “sin” is the transgression of God’s commandments (1 John 3:4). If the Bible doesn’t say that Activity A...
