  • Familiar face appointed to Logan school board

    Staff report|Oct 12, 2022

The Logan Municipal Schools board last week unanimously appointed a new member last week who is a familiar face. The board during an Oct. 3 special meeting appointed Tom Humble, who served on the board for 12 years before losing re-election last year, to replace the recently resigned Scott Osborn. Two candidates sent letters of interest to the board to fill the seat, but superintendent Dennis Roch stated in an email the other applicant withdrew hours before the meeting. As a result, Roch said last Monday’s meeting lasted less than a minute. ...

  • County vacates land for Glenrio developer

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Oct 12, 2022

The Quay County Commission on Monday voted to vacate a section of land in the border town of Glenrio so a developer could build a recreational marijuana dispensary and other projects there. Gabrielle Tuschak, managing partner of Amarillo-based Glenrio Properties, requested during a videoconference that the county vacate land on the village’s First Street and an alley because her company was struggling to obtain permits for infrastructure work. Tuschak said her company wants to set up a dispensary. It would be just feet from the Texas border w...

The empty Kmart building in Tucumcari soon will be empty no more. Principals from the Fast TV Network announced at a news conference last week it will move from Albuquerque into the vacant Kmart and convert it into a television and movie production facility, plus a New Mexico Route 66 Association museum and welcome center. In all, the $8 million project eventually will create between 30 and 70 jobs after its soft opening on July 1, 2023, said Mike Lee, Fast TV's president and CEO, during the...

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Oct 12, 2022

Quay County Clerk Ellen White and her longtime voting machine technician took a few hours last week to certify Dominion vote tabulators for next month's general election. They put the machines through their paces with a small mock election to ensure they are working properly. It took about three hours for White and Danny Wallace, the county's voting-machine technician since 1981, to test and certify eight machines that New Mexico has used for almost a decade. A number of Republican Party...

  • Find unity in the blood of Christ

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Oct 12, 2022

My pocket calendar says today (Oct. 12) is a Mexican holiday called, “Day of the Race.” Having no clue what it was, I looked it up on the internet and found it’s called by various names in various countries, including “Columbus Day.” In Mexico and other Spanish countries and communities, it’s celebrated as the fusion of the Spanish and indigenous American cultures.” The website states that, although there’s some controversy over the events surrounding the European colonization of the Western Hemisphere, the holiday is festively celebrated. In...

Tucumcari in September set its third straight record for legal marijuana sales, with more than $369,000 in recreational and medical sales, according to a news release Friday from the Cannabis Control Division of the Regulation and Licensing Department. That edged the city’s previous record of $356,000 in sales in August. Tucumcari recorded just short of $306,000 in recreational sales and over $63,000 in medical sales in September. • Most important thing is helping voters to vote

    Tom Lopach, Guest columnist|Oct 12, 2022

With midterm elections fast approaching, we should be doing everything we can to help the people of New Mexico participate in our democracy and have their voices heard at the ballot box. That’s why the Center for Voter Information (CVI) was disappointed to see the op-ed published in the Eastern New Mexico News and Quay County Sun -- “Register to vote -- and watch out for mailers,” on Oct. 4. The op-ed has the potential to create distrust about the important work that civic engagement organizations do to empower voters in New Mexico. CVI and o...

  • Don't care about fake laws, crimes

    Kent McManigal, l|Oct 12, 2022

Being political leads to unfortunate outcomes. Politics never makes people act smart. I don’t think federal agents -- FBI or anyone else -- have any business digging for things over which to prosecute Hunter Biden. I don’t find federal agents credible. When someone is targeted for political reasons, whether Donald Trump or Hunter Biden, it makes those targeting them look unintelligent and corrupt. Maybe because they are unintelligent and corrupt -- as bad as their target, or worse. All politically connected people have done things truly wro...

  • Climate change takes color from season

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Oct 12, 2022

This is altogether anecdotal, so I won’t pretend it’s based on scientific observation, but I’ve noticed something in my annual trips to Arkansas for a Thanksgiving get-together in the Ozark Mountains. The autumn leaves seem to be peaking earlier. October is the best time to see a brilliant display of colors in the Ozark Plateau. It’s as if God painted the mountains just for our viewing pleasure. But by the end of November, when I take my trip, the fiery splash of the red, orange, yellow and green broadleaf colors have all but disappe...

  • Logan falls to No. 1 Fort Sumner 40-20

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Oct 12, 2022

LOGAN - Down by one touchdown early in the second half, the host Longhorns moved the ball past midfield and were poised to tie their game against No. 1-ranked Fort Sumner-House. Instead, Foxes defender Clay Norman read Brock Burns' pass, stepped in front of the intended receiver and dove to catch the low throw for an interception. Fort Sumner scored off that turnover and its next possession to seize control of the district game during a 40-20 victory in eight-man football action on Friday. Logan...

  • That championship season

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Oct 12, 2022

The Snake Pit arena at Tucumcari High School contains dozens of banners commemorating various titles its teams have won over the decades. On the south wall of the gym, one stands out. It is a blown-up team photo of the 2002 football team. Amid the identifying text is a line in yellow script: "New Mexico State Champions." Twenty years ago, the Rattlers were in the middle of an eventual run for a state title. The team suffered setbacks and didn't even win their district. But the Rattlers...

  • Lady Rattler spikers fall to Clayton

    Staff report|Oct 12, 2022

The Yellowjackets prevailed 12-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-22, 15-11 over the Lady Rattlers (12-5). “We played really hard, and the team showed great hustle on every play,” Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said. “Clayton had a couple of good/tall blockers that came up with big plays at key points in the game.” Benavidez praised back-row players Alexus Lafferty, Alexis Ramirez and Haisley Huffman for a number of hustle saves. Cambree...

Final points totals weren't available from the event. Bryan Tyler Huey of Mesalands rode his mount during the Saturday finals for a 71...

  • City may use lodgers funds for ballpark lights

    Staff report|Oct 12, 2022

Tucumcari’s city manager said she was exploring an idea of using lodgers tax funds to help pay for new lighting for Tucumcari Public Schools’ ballpark redevelopment project. Paula Chacon said during the city’s Lodgers Tax Advisory Board meeting Wednesday the city has been cultivating a more cooperative relationship with the school district. She said aiding the district with new lights for the new high-school baseball and softball fields that soon would be built would be “an investment that’s beneficial to the city.” However, she said she could...
