The Tucumcari Police Department will be under the direction of new Police Chief David Lathrom beginning Feb. 14, according to City Manager Jared Langenegger. “I’m excited to make the transition and take over the department in Tucumcari,” Lathrom said, adding that there is a great deal of potential for the city and the department, and he is looking forward to working with the officers and the residents. “The police department should be part of the community and have their interest at heart,” Lathrom said. “If we are not working with the people,...

  • House scales back school budget cuts

    Andrew Oxford, The New Mexican|Jan 25, 2017

The state House of Representatives agreed Monday evening to soften the financial blow to New Mexico's public schools. With little discussion, House members voted to scale back cuts for districts and charter schools from a total of $50 million to about $38 million during the next five months. The cuts would be a big part of balancing the state's budget. Proposed by Rep. Patty Lundstrom, D-Gallup, the change ensures that each district or charter still has cash reserves of at least 4 percent of...

  • Officials meet with residents presession

    Thomas Garcia|Jan 25, 2017

Aware of the budget constraints facing state officials, residents met with legislators before the start of the 2017 session to discuss needs and concerns. Local officials had a chance to meet in Santa Fe with legislators on Jan. 18 during the Quay Day reception, while local and state legislators were able to meet with residents, officials and businesses owners from Quay County. The state is in a budget crunch with many legislators looking at bills that will draw back funds and sweep some funds from agencies, said Jared Langenegger, Tucumcari...

  • Secrecy of job applicants not a good practice

    Albuquerque Journal|Jan 25, 2017

It’s a brand new year, with a brand new 60-day state legislative session. Yet as some talk about trying to move the state forward, one powerful New Mexico lawmaker would take it back, quite literally, to the dark ages of government accountability and transparency. It is shocking that Senate President Pro Tem Mary Kay Papen, D-Las Cruces, thinks it’s a good idea to allow public agencies in New Mexico to keep the results of their applicant searches secret until they are down to one (or a few) finalist(s) for a top job at a public agency, ins...

  • Speech had polish of pro writer

    Steve Hansen|Jan 25, 2017

President Trump’s inaugural address has been received alternately with adulation and shock and dismay from the predictable sources. The question remains, however, who wrote it? Having done limited work as a speech writer, I can tell you that Trump’s inaugural address had the earmarks of a professionally written speech. Consider this excerpt: “Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs. And while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all acr...

  • Inauguration covered by has-beens

    Rube Render|Jan 25, 2017

On inauguration day, MSNBC put together a panel led by Rachel Maddow that included Chris Matthews, Brian Williams and Steve Schmidt to provide live coverage of the occasion. The network would have been hard pressed to come up with a more mediocre group of has-been losers. Williams lost his NBC anchor spot on the “Nightly News” for exaggerating the details of his military travels during the Iraq War. He was suspended without pay for six months and is now working on MSNBC. There is some doubt as...

  • Rattlers win three straight

    Thomas Garcia|Jan 25, 2017

A three-game winning streak is just the momentum builder the Tucumcari Rattlers basketball team needs as they prepare for district play Thursday against Clayton at the Snake Pit. "We needed the wins," said John Span, Rattlers head coach. "There are still some areas that we need to address including turnovers." Span said the Rattlers will have to take care of the ball and do a better job of boxing out for the rebound against the Clayton Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets games will begin with...

  • Wrestlers duel Las Vegas today

    Thomas Garcia|Jan 25, 2017

The Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling team has been under the weather but hopes to bounce back today at a duels tournament in Las Vegas. The duels tournament will give the Rattlers a chance to compete against district opponents Saint Michael's and Pojoaque Valley, according to Eddie Encinias, Rattlers head coach. Encinias said the Rattlers have already dueled against Bernalillo and West Las Vegas earlier in the year. He said the plan is to only have to duel Taos and Robertson in the district duels. E...

  • Elida falls to San Jon

    David Norton|Jan 25, 2017

ELIDA - Despite playing a pretty competitive second half, Elida's boys basketball team found themselves in too much of a first-half hole Saturday night and couldn't overcome San Jon, falling 57-40. The Coyotes (6-5, 2-1) were led by the combo of Daniel Lee and Jacob Thurman, who filled up the stat sheet with 18 and 15 points, respectively. The Tigers (2-14, 0-3) were led by Kaul Burton with 15 points. "Our game plan was to try to run our pace," Elida coach Logan Turnbow said, "and move the ball...
