    Ron Warnick|Dec 4, 2019

SAN JON — The San Jon Municipal Schools board of trustees unanimously voted to reject a sports cooperative agreement with Grady and House during a special meeting Nov. 26. “We’re on our own, guys,” board president Frank Gibson said moments after the vote, which was greeted by a smattering of applause from the audience. The proposed two-year agreement would have covered high-school volleyball and basketball starting with the 2020-2021 school year. The current pact wasn’t scheduled to expire until July, but the New Mexico Activities Associati...

  • Area spared worst of winter storm

    Staff report|Dec 4, 2019

Tucumcari and Quay County largely were spared the brunt of a winter storm that moved through the region during the travel rush of the Thanksgiving holiday. About 2 inches of snow fell in Tucumcari by Thursday morning, and much of it had melted by the afternoon amid temperatures in the high 30s. A National Weather Service observer west of Logan reported 1.5 inches. Earlier forecasts had predicted as much as 7 inches of snow in the county. Roads were wet but clear in much of Quay County on Thursday morning, save for a section of U.S. 54...

  • Merry-making

    Ron Warnick|Dec 4, 2019

The inaugural edition of a Very Merry Tucumcari on Saturday also could be described as a Very Busy, Very Blustery Tucumcari. Before a tree-lighting ceremony at dusk Saturday in a windswept and chilly Historic Railroad Depot Plaza, Tucumcari MainStreet executive director Connie Loveland said: "We're going to sing a few carols ..." She briefly stopped, then corrected herself. "OK, one carol," she said, laughing. After an abbreviated sing-along of "Jingle Bells," she, Tucumcari Mayor Ruth Ann Litch...

On this date ... 1969: Two accidents were reported on U.S. 66 east of Tucumcari. A serviceman from Norfolk, Virginia, was injured 1.3 miles east of Endee when the left front tire blew, causing his car to overturn twice. The soldier was thrown from the vehicle and landed in a pasture, cutting his throat on barbed wire. He was transferred to a military hospital to treat his injuries. About 1.6 miles west of the Texas state line, a family from El Norte, California, escaped injury when the station wagon they were towing lost control when the driver...

  • Non-confidential info in shooting should be released

    Dec 4, 2019

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales is either determined to cover up the actions of his department in the tragic shooting death of Elisha Lucero as long as he possibly can — or maybe he’s just a really slow learner. Lucero, a 28-year-old woman suffering from mental illness, was shot multiple times by BCSO deputies who responded to the family residence after family members called for help after she allegedly hit someone. Lucero, who stood 4 foot 11 inches, was armed with a kitchen knife and ran toward three deputies, screaming at the...

  • 'Woke' may be past its prime

    Steve Hansen|Dec 4, 2019

Are you “woke?” I keep hearing this word on late-night television, daytime talk shows and especially in commentary about left-of-center candidates for president on the pundit pages that carry the opinions of very smart writers who keep current on everything. I’ve obviously been asleep for a while, because in its current usage, “woke” has even been defined by Merriam Webster, which means it has been around longer than I thought. Our favorite dictionary people define it as “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (esp...

  • Green Act is shamelessly greedy

    Dec 4, 2019

In a mad dash to expand all their favorite “green” cash grabs before the end of the year, House Democrats have published their most bloated smash and grab yet. They call it the Green Act, but a better name might be the Greed Act. The bill extends wind and solar subsidies — which we’ve been promised for decades would be temporary — for yet another five years. In an effort to gain support from farm states, it revives the biodiesel credit. Most outrageously, the Green Act cancels the phase-out of the electric vehicle subsidies by tripling...

  • Election season is a spiritual challenge

    Gordan Runyan|Dec 4, 2019

Choosing leaders is a spiritual issue. This is proven by the sheer amount of time the Bible spends giving us guidelines for how to evaluate them; teaching us with stories of both good and bad leaders; and, letting us in on God’s thoughts on the process. Choosing leaders is a spiritual issue. Yes, I just said that, but some things are worth saying again. This simple realization about the spiritual nature of these choices has been missed in America for a long time by people on both sides of the po...

  • Wrestling coach anticipates more

    Ron Warnick|Dec 4, 2019

The Tucumcari wrestling team had a pretty good year last season, finishing 13-6 in dual meets, qualifying 13 athletes to the state tournament and one individual winning a championship. Coach Eddie Encinias, starting his 19th campaign after being inducted into the New Mexico Wrestling Hall of Fame a few weeks ago, expects an even better season because he has more depth. He said he has 28 athletes on his varsity team, compared to 22 the previous season. The Rattlers will test that depth during...

  • Tucumcari boys drop opener against Laguna Acoma

    Staff report|Dec 4, 2019

The Tucumcari boys basketball team dropped its season opener during a 75-57 decision Nov. 26 at Laguna Acoma. Foul trouble hampered the Rattlers’ chances during the game. Senior guard TJ Lampkin fouled out in the first half, and the team’s leading scorer last season, guard-forward Jesus Ramos, fouled out in the third quarter. Also, senior forward Robbie Hartmann was kept out of the game. He is recovering from an ankle injury suffered during football season but might be able to play this week. “With certain kids not on the floor, we’re a differe...

  • Logan girls triumph in opener

    Staff report|Dec 4, 2019

The Logan girls basketball team triumphed in its season opener Nov. 26 with a 44-33 home win over Clayton. Jordan Hines led the Lady Longhorns with 15 points, and Karli Webb added 13. Logan coach Glynna Strand said her team looked “pretty raw” after just five days of practice and noted many of her best players also were members of Logan’s state-champion volleyball team. “I think it says a lot that they pulled off a win against a (Class) 2A school with little practice,” she said....
