  • Sands Dorsey demolition hitting roadblocks

    City officials continue to work on a way to demolish and dispose of the Sands Dorsey building in a way that is financially responsible for the residents of Tucumcari. "We have not walked away from this project," said City Manager Doug Powers. Powers said recently the city had a waiver denied by the New Mexico Solid Waste Bureau. He said the waiver was a request to allow the city to place the debris of the demolished building in their new landfill.     If you're a coach, the only thing better than having a strong team this year is getting them back next year. This year is one of those great next years for Eddie Encinias, coach of the Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling squad. His returnees include Agustin Sandoval, a state champ at 145 pounds, and two returning third-place state finishers in Dillon Wood, 126 pounds, and Rudy Vallejo, 220 pounds. All three are seniors.     Student of the month Garrett Le Mons, 16, has been named December 2012 Student of the Month at Tucumcari High School. He is the son of Jimmy and Tammy Le Mons and is a senior. Le Mons has been active in band, playing saxophone, guitar, drums, violin and a little bit of piano. He has a B average and has been an honor roll student and in the All-State band. He hopes to get a doctorate in natural sciences such as geology and paleontology.     Last Tuesday's edition of the Quay County Sun had an informative article, "Senator pushes for wind energy tax credit extension." Our two senators and one representative, Ben Lujan, are for the extension. Ken Starcher, associate director at Alternative Energy Institute at West Texas A&M, explained the importance of the tax credit to speed up the development of wind energy. We were building up to that until the twenty children and six teachers were slaughtered in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.     In the wake of the Dec. 14, mass shooting at an elementary in Newton, Conn., area school administrators are working to improve their lockdown procedures. "It's scary," said Johnnie Cain, superintendent for Logan Schools. Cain said Sand Hook had the security and safety measures in place, despite how prepared they were it turned out tragic. Tucumcari received a pink visitor Thursday, with bicycler Joe Fors coming through the city to talk about cancer.     A need to understand the selection process prompted city commissioners to table the awarding of a $196,048 bid for repair on Whitmore Street. Commissioners tabled one of two agenda items to be voted on Thursday following the concerns expressed by commissioner Daniel Lopez.
