Mesalands Community College will be hosting a Texas Tech University Summer Math Camp Academy sponsored by the National Science Foundation, June 11-17. During this academy, students will have the opportunity to collaborate via the Web with Texas Tech mathematics faculty and staff, and will be exposed to many different facets of mathematics, and learn to apply these skills through projects and research. This program is designed to encourage high school students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines.
"It's important for students to be familiar with modern technology and the jobs that go with that, and to be aware of how technology, mathematics, science, and engineering, can interweave these disciplines," said Forrest Kaatz, STEM Math Success Specialist at Mesalands and is the Facilitator for the academy. "With the STEM Grant Mesalands received, the College is expanding opportunities for students to obtain an associate's or transfer to a bachelor's degree program in a STEM discipline."
The academy is available for high school students that have received an 'A' or 'B' in algebra I and geometry. The academy will consist of math survey lectures from various professors from Texas Tech and time to work on their special projects. On Saturday, participants will travel to Texas Tech for a dinner, and will stay the night at one of the campus dorms and will return on Sunday.
