Bailee Gries enjoys the slide at the city pool Tuesday afternoon.

It's all about getting the kids familiar with the water and the pool's surroundings, said Kim Garcia, pool manager.

Garcia said the sessions do not teach the child the swim, as it's more of an adjustment class to get them used to being around the water. She said the classes are held outside normal business hours so all seven of the life guards can be present to help the children.

The kids learn some basics; floating, how to go underwater and what to expect and what it's like to be in the water, said Recreation manager Scott Simpson.

Garcia said while the pool is there for the child's and adult's enjoyment there are rules which have been set in place to ensure the safety of those in and around the pool.

"We want kids to have a good time, though a safe time as well," Garcia said.
