Lady Rattlers Kinley Jaynes placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles event Saturday during the Rattlers Relays.

The Tucumcari Rattlers girls’ track team qualified for state competition in four events on Saturday during the annual Rattler Relays track meet at Rattler Stadium.

The Lady Rattlers 400-meter relay team qualified for state competition with a time of 53.52.

In field events, two Lady Rattlers had state qualifying throws in the discus. Melissa Gardea threw the disk 106 feet, 2 inches and Aby Jimenez tossed the discus 99 feet 9 inches. Jimenez also qualified in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 7 inches. The Lady Rattlers finished fifth overall with 49 points.

Among Quay County competitors, the Logan Longhorns girls’ team placed fourth overall with 49.5 points. The Longhorn boys placed fifth overall with 45.5 points.

There were 15 schools competing at the Rattler Relays, performing before a great crowd of supporters for both the traveling and home teams, said Wayne Ferguson, Rattlers’ track and field head coach.

Ferguson said the Rattler boys’ team did not qualify for state, but said the boys learned about strengths and weaknesses that they can improve upon.

Ferguson said some members of the boys’ team were playing on the Rattlers baseball team, which had an out-of-town game. The Rattler boys finished seventh overall with 18 points.

The Rattlers will compete next Saturday at the West Las Vegas track meet.
