Fire destroyed a building that served as a workshop and barn on property belonging to Baker Evans in the 3200 block of Quay Road 62 about seven miles east of Tucumcari Monday, according to Rural District 2 Fire Chief Danny Wallace.

The fire sent up columns of black and gray smoke that were visible for many miles along Interstate 40.

Wallace said six units from the Lesbia Fire Station, District 2, and 11 volunteer firefighters responded. The first call came in at about 12:42 p.m. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to arrive at the scene, Wallace said. The firefighters continued to battle the blaze until about 6 p.m., working in sometimes rainy, windy conditions.

Wallace said the fire apparently started in a wood stove inside the building and eventually consumed the entire structure, which burned to the ground.
