Wellness fair to feature free and low-cost screenings

Mammography exams will join the array of free and low-cost medical tests available at the 2014 Community Wellness Fair April 26, sponsored by the Quay County Health Council and Quay County Extension Service, according to a news release from the organizers.

The fair will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26 at the Quay County Convention Center.

In addition, fair goers will have an opportunity to participate in a survey called “Speak up for Quay County” to help identify the health needs of Quay County residents. Survey results will help guide the work of the Quay County Health Council for the next four years, the organizers said. Survey participants will also receive extra chances to win door prizes.

New this year, the New Mexico Department of Health will bring its Mammography Van and provide mammograms on site. To schedule an appointment, those interested may call (888) 233-6121. Most insurance is accepted and a reduced fees are available for those without insurance.

There will be 25 health screenings available, including blood pressure, depression, oximetry to measure heart and lung function, cholesterol, skin cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and dental, among many others.

More than 70 booths with health related information will be available and many special activities including a Kids’ Corner and a large colon that can be walked through to learn about colon health.

UNM Pharmacy School and the Dr. Dan C Trigg Hospital Pharmacy will offer free cholesterol and blood sugar screenings. Persons wishing to be tested should fast for 12 hours before the test is conducted at the fair. The results will be available on site. The Tucumcari Police Department will accept voluntary unused and outdated prescription drugs and have them safely destroyed at the fair. Tucumcari police will also offer car seat safety inspections. A Safer New Mexico-trained officer will ensure that child safety seats are installed correctly or help parents and caregivers to install seats properly.

Admission to the Wellness Fair is one can of food or $1. Proceeds will go to the Ministry of Hope, Tucumcari.

The fair’s theme is “Bring the Pieces Together” for family and community health. There will be activities for all ages and both men and women. Organizers encourage residents to bring out the whole family and enjoy the day. A concession stand will be available.
