Three candidates have applied for Tucumcari’s vacant First District Commission seat, according to Angelica Gray, city clerk.

The deadline for filing applications was Monday.

The three are Rick Haymaker, a musician, pastor and business owner; Gary Southern, a retiree who recently ran for Tucumcari municipal judge; and Jerry Lopez, a life-long resident of of the district.

They are seeking appointment to the position vacated by First District Commissioner Dora Salinas-McTigue, who resigned from the commission on March 24, citing family health concerns. McTigue’s term expires in 2016.

City Commissioners will interview the candidates at a public workshop before their regular meeting on May 8 and are expected to announce a decision at the regular meeting that will follow. The workshop is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m.

Salinas-McTigue survived a recall election in January. Second District Commissioner Jimmy Sandoval was removed from his commission seat in that election. Amy Gutierrez was appointed in March to replace Sandoval.
