Tucumcari Middle School’s Book Fair started Thursday with a public celebration that drew 250 visitors and raised $1,000 for the school’s library.

TMS’s halls and classrooms were crowded with fairgoers enjoying events that included a dance contest, a cake walk, face-painting, a build-your-own taco competition, a nacho eating contest and an egg-mashing contest that involved colored hard-boiled eggs and a hammer, according to Dolly Padilla, the school’s secretary.

Terry Dunlap won the basket draw, for which contestants paid 50 cents per ticket. Veronica Blea, teacher, and Salina Moya, a student, won the costume contest, Padilla said.

The book fair was dubbed “Fiesta de Los Libros,” and focused on Mexican themes.

While Thursday’s events included public happenings, the book fair continued through Thursday, Padilla said.
