Tucumcari woman wins $30,000 in lottery

May 8, 2014

Rosalia Trujillo of Tucumcari won a $30,000 Powerball prize on a ticket declined by another player, according to to a news release from the New Mexico lottery.

Trujillo’s lucky quick-pick ticket for the game’s April 26 drawing matched the white-ball numbers of 3, 7, 22, 30 and 33, the news release said. The $10,000 prize was tripled due to a Power Play®, a $1 option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes between two and five times. Trujillo’s ticket had a Power Play option on 3, the news release said.

Trujillo could not be reached immediately for comment.

Trujillo said she plays only when she can buy a ticket another player didn’t want, a tip she picked up from her brother who won $100 playing a declined ticket. In matching the five winning white balls, Trujillo’s $30,000 winner beat odds of approximately 1 in 648,000, the news release said.

According to the news release, Trujillo discovered her good fortune three days after the drawing when she called the lottery’s hotline.

“I called it three times,” the news release quotes her. “I didn’t believe it. I was shaking.”

Trujillo bought her winning ticket at the Pilot Travel Center, 2021 S. Mountain Road, Tucumcari.

All profits from the sale of New Mexico Lottery games fund an in-state college tuition assistance program. In the past 18 years, more than 500 students from Quay County have received approximately $2.1 million in Legislative Lottery scholarship aid, the news release said.
