The Quay County Extension Office is offering a free day of activities on June 25 aimed at helping grandparents and their grandchildren have some sun, safe time together this summer.

As part of the Extension Office’s Nurturing Grandparent Sessions, the “bring your grandchild to class” program will help grandparents who want to stay busy with their grandchildren, said Brenda Bishop, county extension agent.

Bishop said whether grandparents are hosting the kids for summer visits or they have full-time custody of the children, finding activities during the summer can be difficult. She said the program will include activities that include learning about wind power through a educational materials and conducting wind experiments.

Bishop said the program will be held at the extension office at 216 East Center Street, Tucumcari.Grandparents will work with their grandchildren to design wind turbines, using model kits that allow different types of blades to be placed on the turbine. She said there will be a meter attached to wind turbines, along with a fan to make the turbine blades turn.

The testing of the different blades will help the grandparents and their grandchildren to learn which kinds of blades and adjustments best harness the wind energy.

Bishop said the grandparents and grandchildren will then create a craft item to take home and make a snack. She said the workshop is free, but she requests that to assure adequate supplies, interested persons should call the extension office at 461-0562.
