A Kansas man and child were killed and two other passenger were airlifted to Unviersity Medical Center in Lubbock Texas, Friday night after a single vehicle rollover on U.S. 54 near Nara Visa.
The accident occurred when the driver of a Chevy Tahoe traveling west on Highway 54 swerved to miss a deer, over-corrected and rolled the vehicle several times, said Captain Matt Broom, New Mexico State Police.
Broom said the driver, Jose Chuevas, 41, of Liberal, Kan., and his five-year-old-daughter Emely Chuevas were pronounced dead at the scene. Chuevas and a front-seat passenger were wearing seatbelts, but three children, including Emely, were lying down in the back seat and were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Broom said the two other children were airlifted to the Lubbock hospital, where they are listed in critical condition.
Broom said wreckage from the crash stretched across two lanes and east and westbound traffic on U.S. 54 was stopped for several hours.
