Quay County 4-H hosting state horse show, rodeo

Quay County will host the 53rd annual New Mexico 4-H Horse Show Friday and Saturday at the Quay County Fairgrounds in Tucumcari.

The show includes skill and control competition among the 4-Hers by day, and rodeo events in the evenings, according to Brenda Bishop, 4-H program coordinator for the Quay County Extension Service.

The rodeo includes speed events such as barrels and poles, roping events such as breakaway and team roping, and rough stock events such as steer and bull riding.

Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Rodeo begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Local vocalists will sing the Star Spangled Banner on both evenings, Bishop said.

This year’s announcer will be Brad Hodges, a Quay County 4-H alumnus who spent many years as a 4-H rodeo participant.

Day events start at 7 a.m. both mornings. Competition will be held in showmanship, horsemanship, and reining, Bishop said. Admission to the horseshow is free. These events will be held in the arena on the Quay County Fairgrounds.

Quay County 4-Hers and their parents help with many activities and run a concession stand, Brenda Bishop, coordinator of Quay County 4-H progams, Bishop said.

“This makes our rodeo and horse show true family events,” she said.

In addition, more than 25 volunteers who do not have children in 4-H also help out, Bishop said.

“They are very dedicated to having outstanding events for these kids to participate in,” she said.

Bishop said that the prizes in the Quay County event draw participants from all part ofthe state. “Thanks to the businesses in the county we provide saddles for the all-around winners, and belt buckles for the runner-up all-around winners,” Bishop said, “as well as belt buckles for the rodeo event winners and specialty prizes for the horse show event winners.”
