New Mexico State University President Garrey Carruthers will be the featured speaker at Tucumcari’s NMSU Agricultural Science Center’s annual field day Aug. 7.

The field day is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and the event will end at 9 p.m. The events include dinner for all who attend.

Speakers for this year’s hay wagon tour of the science center will include Leah Schmitz, graduate student in Animal and Range Sciences; Jane Breen Pierce, entomologist from the Agricultural Science Center at Artesia; and Murali Darapuneni, Tucumcari’s semi-arid cropping systems specialist; Rich Pratt, plant breeder and department head of NMSU’s Plant and Environmental Sciences Department; and Leonard Lauriault, Tucumcari’s science center superintendent.

“Because we have a diverse research program, we will have diverse presentations including annual forages for growing beef heifers, glandless cotton, dryland cropping, tepary beans and alfalfa,” Lauriault said. He said the field day is a way to demonstrate “our past discoveries and ongoing explorations to increase agricultural knowledge at the local and global levels.”
