Quay County fair to feature new events and rides

Several new Saturday activities are lined up this year for the Quay County Fair, according to Quay County Extension Agent Brenda Bishop.

The fair opens to the public at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, and will feature four days of events, competition, exhibits and carnival rides.

New on Saturday will be a ranch rodeo, featuring 10 teams, as well as repeats of events that were new last year, including a livestock judging contest and water games for children.

The ranch rodeo begins at noon Saturday in the Rodeo Arena, Bishop said. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $2 for youth age 5 and up. The Livestock Judging Contest begins at 10 a.m., at the south end of the exhibit hall, and the water games for kids, including a water balloon race, begins at 2:30 p.m.

Volunteers have been working hard to prepare for the fair, she said, and visitors are urged to bring their families to enjoy wholesome activities, said Brenda Bishop, county extension agent.

“The fair is four packed-full days and for many of our 4-H and FFA kids, it represents the completion of their yearlong projects,” Bishop said.

On Tuesday, the Home Arts Departments will be accepting entries from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Shepherd’s Lead participants will be practicing in the show ring. Volunteers will tending to last-minute details, Bishop said.

By noon on Aug. 13, all animals and open class entries must be entered and on the fairgrounds, Bishop said. She said young people will be grooming their animals for the Shepherd’s Lead event at 5 p.m., and for the Swine Show at 7 p.m. Volunteers will be working with judges to get entries judged and displayed.

At 9 a.m. Aug. 14, 4-H Dog Project members will participate in a dog show under the direction of Jim Hayes, who has been teaching the young people about showing dogs and training dogs for show. Bishop said the show has been growing slowly the past few years.

During the day, sheep and goat owners will be preparing their animals for the 5 p.m. shows.

On Aug. 15, Bishop said, the horse show will begin at 8 a.m., with 4-Hers competing for buckles. She said the rabbit and poultry shows begin at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m., and at 4:30 p.m., the heifer and steer shows will begin.

The exhibit hall will be open each day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the 4-H concession stand will be open each day from 11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Vendors in the Exhibit Hall will give away door prizes, along with some good bargains.

Sun Valley Rides again will provide the carnival for the fair, Bishop said, and will feature two new rides. Rides we will begin at 5 p.m. each evening.
