School enrollments up overall in Quay County

Total enrollment in Quay County public schools is up by 34 students from enrollment for the 2013-14 school year.

The total enrollment for all public schools in Quay County is 1,506 for the current school year, 2014-15, compared with 1,472 in the 2013-14 school year.

Enrollment increased at the House and Logan school districts, based in part on higher enrollments in the alternative school at House and online programs at Logan, both of which include students from other districts and students who are not of normal school age, district officials said.

Enrollment at San Jon rose from 131 in 2013-14 to 136 this year, but Tucumcari public schools lost five students, compared with last year’s enrollment.

The largest gain was reported in Logan, where enrollment increased from 272 students in 2013-14 to 297 in the current 2014-15 school year, a gain of 25 students.

Much of that gain could be attributed to increased enrollment in Logan’s online classes.

“The regular school enrollment includes school-age students only,” Superintendent Dennis Roch said, “but the online classes include a lot of adults of all ages.”

Last year, Roch said, the high school’s enrollment included the online enrollment. This year, however, the district separated the online from the high school. Including the online enrollment, the 2013-14 high school enrollment was 110. This year, however, high school enrollment, without the online component, is 67. When the 49 online students are added, high school enrollment jumps to 116.

Logan’s elementary and middle schools also reported enrollment increases this year. Logan elementary’s enrollment rose from 111 in 2013-14 to 122 this year. Logan Middle School’s enrollment rose from 51 in 2013-14 to 59 this year.

In House, Superintendent Lecile Richards said his district separated the district’s alternative school enrollment from the high school this year. Last year they were counted together. House’s high school enrollment dropped from 35 in 2013-14 to 19 this year, but if this year’s alternative school enrollment of 23 were figured in, the enrollment would rise to 42.

House Elementary School’s enrollment stayed the same at 21 for both years. House Junior High School’s enrollment rose by two, from 23 in 2013-14 to 25 this year.

In San Jon, the elementary school’s enrollment is up by two, from 75 last year to 77 this year. The middle school’s enrollment jumped from 29 in 2013-14 to 34 this year.

Superintendent Colin Taylor said the increase in middle school enrollment was due to an unusually large 5th grade class last year that entered middle school this year. The high school’s enrollment, however, dropped by two, from 27 in 2013-14 to 25 this year.

Tucumcari schools reported enrollment of 985 students for the current school year, compared with 990 reported to the state public education department for the 2013-14 school year.

Tucumcari Elementary School’s enrollment dropped by eight, from 520 in 2013-14 to 512 for the current year. Tucumcari High School’s enrollment dropped by two, from 246 in 2013-14 to 244 for the current year. Tucumcari Middle School’s enrollment increased by five, from 224 to 229.

Comparing this year’s total enrollments to enrollments five years ago, the 2009-10 school year enrollments, however, show that Tucumcari has lost 59 students over five years and San Jon schools have lost 11 students over the same period. House schools, meanwhile have gained nine students, and Logan’s enrollment has increased by 87.

Comparing the 2009-10 enrollments, to last year’s however, shows that Logan’s enrollment rose from 217 in 2009-10 to 272 in 2013-14, a gain of 55. House’s enrollment was the same in 2013-14 as in 2009-10, at 79.

The county’s total for the 2009-10 school year was 1,487. This year’s total enrollments were 1,506 in all schools. Last year’s county total, which included the online and alternative school enrollments, was only 1,472 students, which would be a net loss of 15 students.
