The (11-1) Logan Lady Longhorns won their third tournament on Saturday in Cimmaron taking the quarter-final, semi-final and championship matches each in three straight sets.

The only match that went to five sets was against a district opponent, the Fort Sumner Vixens. The Lady Longhorns did not play against Dora, another district opponent, in poll or bracket play during the tournament.

“Although we would have like to compete against Dora, this tournament gave us another chance to compete against some stout competition,” said Robert Young, Lady Longhorns head coach.

Young said the Lady Longhorns had another chance to play against the Santa Rosa Lady Lions, a team they will face again this Thursday in Logan.

“Santa Rosa is such a quick and powerful team,” Young said. “Their aggressive style of play helps us to work on keeping our feet moving on defense.”

Young said the team’s passing was spot-on with the setters rotating between each hitter, keeping the defense off balance. He said the setters did a great job of getting the ball to different hitters, giving each a chance at open kills.

Young said the Lady Longhorns still had some issues with serving in pool play. They gave away points because they were rushing their serves, trying to keep the points rolling, he said.

“The girls calmed down once we entered into bracket play,” Young said. “The serving issue is one that we are constantly looking to correct.”

Young said he wants to have the Lady Longhorns calm and focused when they’re serving by the time district play begins on Oct. 4.

The Lady Longhorns next match is at 6 p.m. Thursday against Santa Rosa at Logan.

The (3-4) Tucumcari Lady Rattlers lost to Dexter on Thursday in a non-district match.

The Lady Rattlers continue to work on their passing to attack rather than just returning the ball over the net.

The Lady Rattlers next game is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Melrose at Tucumcari.

The (0-5) San Jon Lady Coyotes lost to the (3-2) Mosquero Lady Pirates in their first district match-up Saturday at San Jon.

The Lady Coyotes had lost in three sets on Thursday to the Lady Longhorns.

“We need to work on our communication on the floor and our footwork,” said Tyra Moore, Lady Coyotes head coach.

The Lady Coyotes next game is at 5 p.m. Thursday at Elida.

The (1-5) House Cowgirls will play against a district opponent, the Grady Lady Bronchos, at 5 p.m. Thursday at Grady.
