At a special meeting Sept. 16, the Tucumcari City Commission authorized allocations totaling $65,500 in grant and tax fund and “in-kind” contributions of labor and resources, to fund the 2015 Youth Conservation Corps program for 2015.

Mark Martinez, a city community development project manager, said the high school students and young adults hired for the 2015 program will work on renovating the Del Norte Center. The improvements will include remodeling bathrooms to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and landscaping the grounds with dry-climate vegetation that reduces water use.

The 2014 Youth Conservation Corps workers focused their efforts at the Tucumcari Little League Field, where they made improvements on the bleachers, installed ground-level dugouts and new sidewalks. They also framed and built metal canopies for picnickers and spectators and painted the field’s concession stand.

Participants received construction education credit from Mesalands Community College, and participants whostay with the summer program for four years are eligible to receive college scholarships or lump-sum cash payments.
