Tucumcari subs to get higher pay

QCS Staff

Substitute teachers in Tucumcari public schools got a pay raise as a result of a school board vote Friday.

The raise gives long-term substitutes who are writing lesson plans $100 a day. Certified substitutes now receive $75 per day and non-certified substitute teachers receive $70 per day. Substitutes for tutoring, summer and homebound students will now receive $25 per hour.

The school board also accepted donations to support Tucumcari High School’s girls’ volleyball team totaling $700.

The donations from local businesses, Superintendent Aaron McKinney said, helped defray the cost of hosting the Tucumcari Invitational volleyball tournament on Sept. 4 and Sept. 6.

Donors included Tucumcari General Insurance, Quality Lube and Tire, Pacheco Construction and Trucking, Mesalands Community College, Wild at Heart Floral, Terry’s Service Center at Logan, Bob’s Budget Pharmacy, A to Z Cellular and Everyone’s Federal Credit Union.

The board also accepted donations of $200 from Mike and Frances Morgan and $25 from the Quay Schools Credit Union to support FFA activities.

In a report to the board, McKinney said he is interviewing candidates for a part-time athletic liaison position. The person he holds that job, he said, would work with members of school athletic teams to keep team members involved in sports and enrolled in school. The job would pay around $2,500 a year, McKinney said.
