The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers and Logan Lady Longhorns honored two Tucumcari women fighting breast cancer during a Dig Pink volleyball game Saturday at the Snake Pit.

Theresa Martinez and Margie Garcia were both presented with a bracelet and given a standing ovation as they were recognized and supported by the two teams and the crowd for their current fight against cancer.

“We raised $700 with raffles and a bake sale on Saturday and all of that money will go towards supporting a local resident who is battling cancer,” said Lawrence Sena, Lady Rattler’s head coach.

Each team wore pink uniforms during the non district match up between the Lady Rattlers (9-10) and the Lady Longhorns (16-3).

The Lady Longhorns won the game in four sets, (25-12, 18-25, 25-13 and 25-15).

The girls had issues again with serving errors giving up points and breaking our tempo, said Robert Young, Lady Longhorn’s head coach.

Young said the girls have been working all season to eliminate those types of errors that give points to the other team. He said another issue was communication on the floor that led to bad passes and missed digs and blocks.

The Lady Rattlers took advantage of these errors pulling away early in the second set and holding onto the lead for the win.

“Even though we lost this game I am very excited with how the girls played,” Sena said.

Sena said the girls showed a lot of resiliency in the matches and did not give up playing the sets when they got behind. He said from the second set into the next two sets the Lady Rattlers showed they can produce on offense and are very capable of putting together a scoring run while matching the other team on defense.

Young said the Lady Longhorns will continue to work on playing smart and being focused when it comes to serving and making sure they don’t give up the easy points that can let the game get away from them.

Lady Longhorns last regular season game is at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at Merlose.

The San Jon Lady Coyotes (5-9) (2-3) will play their last regular season game at 6:30 p.m., Thursday against the Floyd Lady Broncos (5-11) (3-5) at San Jon.

The House Cowgirls (2-12)(0-8) will play their last regular season game at 4:30 p.m., against the Clovis Christian Lady Eagles (0-7) at House.
