The Logan Longhorns used the final offensive series during their district 2 championship Friday night to get graduating defensive lineman Jessie Sanchez an entry into the scoring record books.

“Jessie was going to get a touchdown, that is all there was too it,” said Wyatt Strand, Longhorn’s senior quarterback.

With the game well in hand and less than two minutes on the clock the Longhorns hurried to push for the goal line.

Strand had already chalked up four rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns to two receivers, and the Longhorns had also scored a rushing touchdown by Brinton Roach and a safety.

To cap the last march downfield, though, there was a change in the backfield when the Longhorns got to the two yard line and a first-and-goal situation. Sanchez was now on offense lined up as the fullback.

“It was senior night, and Jessie has worked so hard for us we wanted to do something special for him,” said Kene Terry, Longhorn’s head coach.

Terry said the team had been working on the play during the week and planned on running it during the championship.

Strand took the snap and Sanchez bulled forward, but he was stopped short of the goal line. On the second attempt Sanchez was met by a Foothill Falcons defender who tackled him low, stopping his progress.

On third down and goal Sanchez, however, would not be denied. He met the defenders at the line, tucked the ball tight and spun to his left, breaking the plane into the end zone for his first score as a Longhorn.

“This means so much to me. I can’t believe I scored a touchdown,” Sanchez said, crying at the 5-yard line after the game.

Sanchez said that coach Terry had told him that he was going to get all of the seniors a touchdown this season.
