The Logan Longhorns have earned the second-seed in the 2A volleyball state tournament after defeating the Lady Buffaloes Saturday night for the District 2 championship at Melrose.

“It came down to five sets and I am very proud of how the girls took control of the final match and never looked back,” said Robert Young, Lady Longhorns head coach.

Young said the Lady Longhorns (19-3) (4-2) played strong to win the first two matches against the Lady Buffaloes (15-5) (5-1). He said service errors and being out of place on defense allowed the Lady Buffaloes to take the third and fourth set.

Young said that the Lady Longhorns had a breakdown in their defense that allowed the Lady Buffaloes to tip the ball over for points. He said the Lady Buffaloes also changed up their attack formations that also caught the Lady Longhorns off guard and had them adjusting late in the sets.

Young said in the final set, a service error by the Lady Buffaloes gave the Lady Longhorns the lead and the serve, which allowed the Logan girls to pull ahead 7-3 in a set that goes to 15 points.

Despite winning the District 6 championship the Lady Longhorns were seeded behind the first-seed Lady Buffaloes due to the outright season and district records.

Next, the Lady Longhorns will play in state pool play against the Mora Rangerettes (15-6) and the McCurdy Lady Bobcats (11-9), beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho.
