Rattler wrestlers set for Cardinal Classic

The Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling team has had a week off due to inclement weather but is ready for one last grueling challenge before the district duels and open tournaments, said Head Coach Eddie Encinias.

Encinias said the Cardinal Classic at Roberston in Las Vegas is going to be a true challenge for the Rattler wrestlers.

“There will be 24 teams competing at this tournament and each team member is sure to wrestle up to eight matches each,” Encinias said, “and I’m expecting to have several place in the top five.

Junior Paul Lucero said, “This tournament is going to get us back into the flow of things and help us prepare for district.”

Lucero said he and the other Rattler wrestlers want to push themselves throughout the season in order to be ready for these tough tournaments towards the end of the season.

Encinias said the Rattlers did an outstanding job in their last tournament on Jan. 17 at Pecos. He said they had one champion, and four other wrestlers place in the top four.

Lucero placed first in the 132 pound division, Antonio Norton was second at 195 pounds, Isaiah Valrverde was second at 285 pounds, Rod Dunlap was fourth at 106 pounds and Michael Shelton was fourth at 152 pounds.

“I am extremely proud of all the guys, not just those that placed during tournaments,” Encinias said. “Every single one of these guys has shown tremendous heart this season and makes me very hopeful about district, state and next year.”

Encinias said another key to the Rattlers wrestling team’s success has been the support of the wrestler’s parents.

“The parents have been so amazing each year and have shown such support towards the program,” Encinias said. “They help to make each year a success.”

Game Time: 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at Las Vegas.
